...choice this time was the LG RHT497H, I purchased this about four weeks ago for a little over £180 and have so far enjoyed using it and the picture quality it serves up is excellent.
I should probably give a mention to the TV I have it attached to before I go much further just so as you know exactly what I am using and then you do not expect the same picture quality from a 14 inch CRT portable. My TV is a Samsung next generation 63 inch crystal plasma ... ...for someone else. The LG RHT497H has a built in freeview tuner but can of course be linked up to Sky or Cable services allowing you to record from those instead, the recorder is also HD so it is capable of recording HD images from the HD channels should you have them, I have recorded Sky Sports in HD and it looks every bit as good played back as it does straight from the live presentation.

...for a new replacement, but LG only suplly a reconditioned unit with 3 months waranty. OK, but could have been better.
The menu created on a DVD is fairly basic, but does the job. Recording quality is fine, but there are a couple of rough edges in the menu and operating system.

Review of LG RH 7500
I've had one of these for just over a year now and lets just say it has been... problematic. First the good points (yes there are some!)
It will record on DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW discs and play DivX, VCD's and MP3/WMA files and also view JPEG images, in fact pretty much anything you can throw at it. Also has component output so if you have a HD television you can take advantage of it's progressive scan output, and standard digital and analogue audio ... ...no digital tuner, so once the analogue tv signal is switched off the internal tuner will be redundant. Also it will not 'pass-through' an RGB Scart signal from one Scart socket to the other - for example if I connect my Sky Digibox to the recorder's AV-in Scart socket it will not output the Digibox's RGB signal from the recorder's AV-out resulting in inferior picture quality.

...rang LG. They said that LG DVD recorders are not meant to work with external HD. I do not see the point of bothering to install a USB port and then allow recognition of flash USB drives of limited size only. It defeats the object of building a machine that can read DivX from an external source!

Review of LG RHT399H
Advantages: Value, quality, ease of use Disadvantages: None to mention at this price
Excellent value for money and good performance.
The DVD section is a breeze to use and it copes with just about anything you can throw at it. As a player it is happy with disks that have never played properly in other machines.
The VCR section seems to work fine and is very quiet and picture quality seems good by VCR standards.
Shared settings like setting the timer that can be used for both the DVD recorder and VCR and with room for 16 entries ... ...Good buld quality and a reasonbly good looking unit.
Best of all, it was about 25% cheaper than similar models on sale at the time I bought it..
This is old technology with a VCR recorder, but a really simple way to transpose VCR to DVD and get rid of those old decaying tapes. ...
