Great for its features, not so for the reliability
Advantages: DVD-DL recording, optical output, DVD-R and DVD-+R, lots of features Disadvantages: DVD drive reliabilty, can't watch and record at same time
I originally bought the Liteon LVW-5045GDL+ model fro Currys Digital a coupld of years ago when they were doing it on promotion for whatever football cup was on.
We used it for several months without problems, recording to both the HDD and DVDs, and playing many DVDs - both commercial and home-burned.
After about 8 months, the DVD suddenly stopped recognising blank DVDs. I took it back to Currys, who replaced it with the HD-A 740 GX model they ... ...really don't get this as Liteon have a great reputation for their optical drives in PCs!
Anyway, aside from this, the 740 is a great DVD recorder - it can record to Dual-layer DVDs, has optical output for home cinema, can be firmware upgraded, and has a pretty decent - if complex - menu system.
Avoid using the EP and SLP modes - the picture quality is a bit jagged at times.
Some makes of DVDs are simply not recognised, but that's really not big ...

Very pleased
Advantages: cheap, many inputs, easy to use and set up Disadvantages: long finalize and start up times, little choice in chapter length.
...brand.
I found the liteon for 135 dollars at walmart, 20 dollars more then a durabrand and a magnavox but I knew lite-on, it was the brand of my computers burner.
I bought the machine and right after getting it home I was already impressed, the ease of set up was astonishing. I quickly ran my digital cable box through the machine, ran the machine to my tv using component cables, and attached my dvd player and vcr to the machine using component ... ...in, and component out as well as the coax in and out and the rca in and out all on the back the machine also has a usb in and rca in on the front which I use for moving content off my camcorder and digital cameras.
You can set the length of time the dvd will record for 2 4 6 and 8 hours each one losing a little more picture quality. The chapter breaks however are not as customizable as the dvd record time.
I have put this machine through a tremendous ...

LITEON DD-A500GX DVD RECORDER
Advantages: Nice Appearance Disadvantages: No menu and quite difficult to set up
...occasionally.
I looked up liteon website and found there was firmware to correct this problem, which I downloaded, followed the correct procedure but it made no difference.
I thought perhaps it was the discs I was using but after playing them on my son's player there was no fault with the discs, which were high quality discs.
Another big minus is there is no menu when a disc is inserted so. Disc plays automatically and you have to scroll through ...

Good DVD recorder until it stopped recording
Advantages: Cheap, Plays MP3's and Photo CD's, Good sound Disadvantages: Poor build quality and mine like others have broken after a few months
This was the first DVD recorder that i bought about two and a half years ago and seen as it was fairly new technology, i opted for the cheapest i could find, and hence i ended up with this. I have been a bit disappointed with the recorder since i first bought it, mainly due to its poor build quality and confusing menus. Set up was fairly straight forward using the scart sockets on the back of the machine and the remote was easy to use and well laid ... ...option to use optical cable, rf tuners, digital outs and audio/video connections which gives the user a wide choice depending on your needs. The recorder plays pre recorded DVD's very well although i do find it is a bit noisy when reading the disc. The dolby sound from the machine is very crisp and the same is true when playing MP3 cd's using this system. The problems for me only started when i used it for recording. After a few months I found the ...

Bin The VCR!
Advantages: One of the cheapest dual format recorders Disadvantages: slow to start recording from standby
Lite-On Electronics is a well established and respected manufacturer of optical drives for PCs (a lot of Hewlett Packard branded drives are manufactured by Lite-On). Given this prior knowledge, plus the fact that the LVW5006 writes to both + and - discs, I decided to go for this model rather than the Bush/Alba/Goodmans offerings within the same price bracket.
The LVW5006 comes complete with comprehensive instructions, a set of AV leads and a rewritable ... ...is a link to the support website, where you can download the latest firmware and view an up to date list of compatible branded blank discs.
Unlike machines from more recognised brand names, this machine is not "plug 'n' play" and channel set up takes longer than I would like. Once the automated process of finding all the channels is completed, it is necessary to do a lengthy swap-around to put the channels where you want them, as they are organised ...
