Phillips DVDR 3380, Good DVD recorder with DIVX
Advantages: Good Value, Excellent Picture, Many Recording Options Disadvantages: Controls slightly slow when changing functions.
Generally a good value product. You can choose from SLP, EP, HQ and SP for recording modes. You can get up to 6 hours of programmes on a single DVD+RW using SLP (Super Long Play) and the quality is always excellent. The recorder has two scart connections which allows you to record from both your sky and terrestrial TV. You can of course play DVDs and you can change region easily if required. In addition you can play DIV-X movies through it. Recording ... ...recording if you want to exclude adverts. The great thing ive also found is that formatting the disc is easy and only takes less than a minute. There are even editing funtions which allow you to"split" a recording ie in case you left it to record for too long. The only drawback is that the controls sometimes seem slightly unresponsive or there is a slight pause when using the remote. Also when recording multiple programmes to a disc and then erasing ...

Philips DVD Hard Drive Recorder DVDR3440H
Advantages: DVD and Hard Driv e in one package Disadvantages: Copy protected software rejects certain TV programmes
From the outset this appears to be a useful and reasonably priced unit. The DVD recorder works well, and the results are of good quality, but it is advisable to only use DVD+R discs, and the DVD+RW will not work in some other machines. The Hard Drive gives good quality, but suffers a serious disavantage. Certain programmes may be rejected due to Copy Protection software built into the unit. The problem here is that the user is not warned at the start ... ...impossible to stop the machine. The percentage of rejection may be small, but this feature renders the Hard Drive unreliable. Recording onto DVD from archive home videos is quite good, but it is best not to use a Scart, instead go in at front on Phono leads. When using Scart, the recorder is liable to go into pause mode if home recording is of poor quality.
Whilst the unit seems to be of good quality, the isssue of Copy Protection should be made ...

Phillips DVD Player - Brilliant
Advantages: Looks good, Loads of features Disadvantages: Expensive, Quite big
I bought this product a few days ago and I thinks its brilliant. In terms of the looks its stylish, and sleek. Not only you can you watch DVD in HD but also you can pause live TV, record it on its 160 gig hard drive and store photos and videos. For the price I feel it was a little too much. I paid £140 at Sainsbury. But looing at sources you can get it for much less (£80 - £100)
I would reconmend this product to anyone who likes whatching TV and ... ...a hifi. It is east to set up, just connect the two wires (included) to the back of the TV. Next you just follow the simple instructions to add channels. You can also add VCR players and also a Top Up Box. All of the things to make this product work is inclueded even the bays for the remote.
So what are you waiting for! Get buying ...

Beyond the VCR
Advantages: Guideplus; several recording modes; plays CDs and MP3s Disadvantages: Freezes occasionally; missed programme endings
...integrate as promised with my Philips Freeview box. However, I've learned to live without that. **** New info ****
My final gripe is that this is supposed to be a multi-region DVD player, but so far I've not managed to get that to work.. Some players come pre-hacked, while with others you have to do it yourself. Mine is one of the latter, and I've not yet got around to doing a search for the relevant info. Since I had a multi-region player before ... ...it on sale now for as low as £150 from many online retailers.
****
Summary
In spite of my gripes, I've never regretted buying this recorder. Apart from the minor annoyances, the only useful addition would be a hard disk as well, and Philips has another model with this feature. ...
