Time to save shelf space. Advantages: Records to both HDD and DVD,Freeview Disadvantages: Not HD ready,Discontinued model I have owned a HDD freeview recorder for moore than 2 years now (Humax PVR 800T). brought before twin tuner HDD devices existed within my price bracket. I needed ,Wanted to save a few films and TV programmes I had on the HDD.I also wished to transfer recordings I have on video tape onto DVD. So went out and about searching for a DVD recorder with a HDD and freeview tuner and came across this model. Set up was easy and navigating wasnt too hard ... ...thick...thats because you can do so much with this piece of equipment...and I recommend being patient and reading it all and keeping it to hand for a few days till you have acclimatised yourself to how to get the best from it. There are two internal tuners one is freeview the other is analog which will be redundant in under 3 years from now but a handy choice to have in the meantime. Pioneer DVR-LX61D - Don't be caught out by this one! Advantages: well-built, good enough picture and sound quality, easy to use Disadvantages: Ethernet on VISTA only (not on XP), rather expensive for what it is ...But compared to these the Pioneer is sturdier. Very well built. Even so, anyone interested in LX61D for its Ethernet facility should note that this ONLY works with Windows VISTA. You can't connect LX61D via Ethernet to a PC running Windows XP (any flavour). XP users must connect via USB. Your router will see LX61D okay. But XP can't use the connection. Page 125 of the manual makes this clear: 'Use a PC with a Windows Vista operating system. This ... ...systems.' But Pioneer doesn't allude to this on its web site. Sneaky, huh? So, unless you're running VISTA, forget about Ethernet and think 'USB ONLY'. Then go buy the longest USB cable that will work. Actually this might be best because transferring DIVX movies to LX61D via Ethernet takes ages. Whereas USB transfers go much, much quicker. Review of pioneer DVR 545 HXS Advantages: Great quality, lots of useful features Disadvantages: Takes a lot of time to work out how to use! ...programmes for viewing and recording. Also films and sport are shown in different colours so are easy to pick out. The remote link function is also handy. Good little HDD/DVD recorder Advantages: EPG, recording modes, HDD recodring and DVD playback Disadvantages: Only one recording format ...not the DVD+R, but hey with the progress of technology I now believe that Pioneer have produced one of these. No HDMI output either, but hey component video out is fine considering our TV is not HD at this time. Overall recommended as a piece of kit. ... cozy nights in Advantages: easy to use great picture quality Disadvantages: a little costly Samsung DVD-SH895 This HDD ready DVD player is quite impressive although it is a tad costly, you can find it at Tesco’s for £199 and may pay a little more at other stores such as Curry’s or Comet. Although having said that if you go to the checkout at Comet and tell them you’ve found it cheaper elsewhere they wil look it up on their computers and match the price, I have done this several times at Comet and they have always matched the price of other ... ...and compare prices. The Samsung DVD is black and has built in freeview, which saves on buying two items separately. Its easy to set up, just plug in and go to the menu to tune in the free view and away you go. The quality of the picture is excellent, I noticed the difference in quality straight away, the picture is cleared and crisp. It doesn’t come with extra scart leads though so you have to buy these separately. It has a CD ripping function ...
