One stop HDD/DVD recorder and Freeview with photo support
Advantages: It's a Sony, fully compatible with existing kit and buckets of features Disadvantages: Not as cheap as third party units
The Sony RDR-HXD995 is a combined DVD and hard disk recorder with built in analogue and freeview tuners with analogue and digital outputs.
It could be seen as providing the same functionality of several ‘set top boxes’ namely a freeview receiver, DVD player/recorder (as well as supporting Audio CD) and a Hard Disk recorder – giving essentially the same functionality as a VCR machine.
The main advantage of such a system is that it greatly simplifies ... ...it work with the proprietary Sony ‘SACD’ format however that isn’t a major shortcoming for many people.
I believe you can also use the system as an audio ‘jukebox’ but you’d have to feed it MP3 files via the USB ports, I don’t think it ‘rips’ standard audio CDs.
I’ll give a bit of background about how I came to briefly use this machine;
My father’s trusty VCR had gone on the blink – it looked like power supply had burned out, he was all for getting ...

The Sony RDR-HXD 790 is a finicky but effective piece of kit.
Advantages: Does exactly what it should. Quite smart-looking. Lots of different features. Disadvantages: Finicky to begin with. Instruction manual not crystal clear.
For a first time buyer of a DVD recorder, the RDR-HXD 790 is admittedly not the simplest machine to operate. To begin with is the initial connecting and setting up of the recorder. Although the instruction manual gives varying options of how to connect it to televisions, sound systems, cable receivers, etc, it was not terribly clear. I bought this DVD recorder to live in the same corner as a digital television, DVD player, and Sky + box, but the ... ...be received through the DVD recorder, which also has a digital input and hard drive recorder built in that allows you to pause live television. However, there is a way around it: For example, if you want to record two things on Sky +, record another on the DVD hard drive, and watch another through the television, you will need to plug the aerials into the digital sockets on the back of the DVD recorder, not the analogue as described in the manual. ...

Sony RDR-HXD890 what a great player it is.
Advantages: It looks very smart, It's not hard to use, quiet when playing the DVD disc. Disadvantages: A little bit pricey
...play. I think that the Sony is a very good quality product to purchase. From my point of view I have always found that most Televisions and other electrical goods come with very complicated remote controls and buttons, but I found that the Sony wasn't so daunting after all. So over all in my opinion I think this is a good DVD player to go for if your looking to have the extra wow in your DVD player. Enjoy. ...

Too slow
Advantages: Good look, menus are easy to use Disadvantages: Slow, only Eurpoean dvds are playable
...product look great (like all Sony products). It’s a bit tedious to set up – I took maybe half an hour as there is a long period of searching for the system setting that you can’t skip. Once set up it is easy to record and to watch things you have recorded – the menu system is intuitive and easy to use. There is a good inbuilt system for labelling what you have recorded on the disc so you know what to delete and what to watch. There are sever quality ... ...picture quality and length of recoding time – I tend to use of the intermediate settings and the picture is fine and you can record for up to 4 hours (although it is feasible to record for longer).
However, the functionality leaves a little to be desired. In particular it seems to take ages for the player to detect the disc and when you have finished watching something you have recoded it takes ages (maybe 2 min) for the machine to eject the disc. ...

Sony 725 DVD Recorder - A Must Have !!!
Advantages: Easy to use. Always buy Sony. Disadvantages: Cannot think of any at the mo.
Love it !! So pleased we got it, only wish we'd got is sooner. Purchased on E-Buyer for £214. Great value. Love the pause TV. Easy set up (well, I can say that, I didn't have to put all the wires in), other half did it. Not too much moaning and groaning though. Go and buy yourself one now. Its great only having the one remote control. The guide plus is just fantastic. Recording is just so easy now, just a case of pressing a couple of buttons. Love ...
