Advantages: Expandability, menu and 5.1 ch preservation, looks pretty cool too Disadvantages: ethernet conectivity tough to use, bookmarks function doesn't work
I needed a system capable of storing my entire DVD collection in a convenient and accessible format; i chose this product because of its ability to output high quality DVD quality videos whilst preserving its multi channel sound track and menus (if you wish).
The device itself looks the part and wouldn't look out of place in any tech mad front room; its actually smaller than i thought it might be.
After much playing around i ended ... ...the quality and the menus. The DVDs of TV series' etc i saved as AVI files (XVID-MPEG-4/ AC3 audio) which enabled me to save all the episodes into 1 file. The AVI files play each in turn without having to go back to the menu. The transfer of files is easy and the TVIX shows as a drive listed in My Computer, then each file can be dragged and dropped.

After much playing around i ended up saving the important DVDs as .ISO files which preserved the quality and the menus. The TVIX is also very expandible; i have 2x 1.5 tb USB hard drives plugged into the back and it can be further expanded by utilising the ethernet connectivity, although this is not as easy as it sounds and the net manager program (available from the TVIX homepage) is fairly difficult for the novice network user. The loading times for the files stored on the USB drives aren't in anyway instant but once its done its like using bulit in hard drive. Top tip, the USB drives are accessible from the main menu by pressing number 8 and number 9 to load each drive, the guide does not explain this. The video and audio connections are adequate although no HDMI connection oddly enough. I have connected it via S Video and optical cables to an amplifier. This gives in my opinion an excellent quality experience; although the output quality is only as good as the input files so if you're sloppy in your ripping you'll get sloppy movies outputted. In hindsight i bought the tvix with a hard drive built in already (this is removable and interchangeable) but with the USB drives attached there is actually no real need to do this. In terms of audio (music CDs) the quality was excellent after i figured out that the TVIX does not like the artwork files that accompany the files, after deleting them the playback was faultless. Image slideshows are a nice touch, although it does struggle with photos that are of a large size, making presentations a bit painful. I would have rated this product excellent overall except for the much heralded bookmarks feature which i have never been able to work. Apart from the few niggles and the average instruction booklet (there is a lot of advice and tips available online) overall this is a really top notch device which has successfully freed up a lot of space previously taken up with DVDs; all from the comfort of my sofa.
