D-Day: June 6, 1944 relies on over 1,400 interviews with veterans, as well as prodigious research in military archives on both sides of the Atlantic. He provides a comprehensive history of the invasion which also eloquently testifies as to how common soldiers performed extraordinary feats. A major theme of the book, upon which Ambrose would later expand in Citizen Soldiers, is how the soldiers from the democratic Allied nations rose to the occasion and outperformed German troops thought to be invincible. The many small stories that Ambrose collected from paratroopers, sailors, infantrymen, and civilians make the excitement, confusion, and sheer terror of D-day come alive on the page. --Robert McNamara

Advantages: All the beaches of D-Day with all it's horrors, humour, ingenuity and bravery Disadvantages: none
After watching The Band of Brothers TV series I went out and bought the book. It was a great book, so I bought another by the author (StephenEAmbrose) and that was this book - DDayJune1944 ( The Climactic Battle of World War II ).
This book tells the story of the preparation for and execution of D-Day analysing every aspect of the Overlord plan and execution.
It starts with why they appointed Eisenhower to be the supreme commander, why they chose the beaches they did. The deception used to make Hitler think that the invasion would come to the east of the Seine (so effective he kept his Panzer divisions there a month after the invasion started believing that it was just a faint and that the "true" invasion would come to the east of the Seine.
It then goes through the intense training and preparation of the invasion force.

Advantages: Literally brilliant Disadvantages: no noticeable faults
Well written account of stupendous achivevemnts by the Ox and Bucks regiment under the command of John Howard far surpasses any achievement of american counterparts on D-Day(call me biased) adavantage of this book are that in previous books written by stephenEambrose thay have always been written with an american perspective and emphasise and little focus on British achievements during world war 2. this book is completly focused on the cut throat raid at caen in normandy france in which john howards glider regiment had to secure a heavily guraded bridge crucial to the allied effort in moving inland on D-day to alleviate casualtys on the beaches and cover more ground. An extremley engrossing read, I couldn't put it down and I would rate it as on par if not better than StephenEAmbroses Band of brothers. The book is clearly presented ...

Manufacturer's product description
It is the young men born into the false prosperity of the 1920s and brought up in the bitter realities of the Depression of the 1930s that this book is about. The literature they read as youngsters was anti-war and cynical portraying patriots as suckers slackers and heroes. None of them wanted to be part of another war. They wanted to be throwing baseballs not handgrenades; shooting .22s at rabbits not M-1s at other young men. But when the test came when freedom had to be fought for or abandoned they fought (from the Prologue). On the basis of 1400 oral histories from the men who were there this account reveals how the intricate plan for the invasion of France in June 1944 had to be abandoned before the first shot was fired. The true story of D-Day as Stephen Ambrose relates it is about the citizen soldiers - junior officers and enlisted men - taking the initiative to act on their own to break through Hitler's Atlantic Wall when they realized that nothing was as they had been told it would be.
