After running a simple D-Link configuration wizard, I had wireless internet access on my laptop. File/printer sharing was a bit more tricky. For those looking to set up a first network this would be a good choice, particularly for a small home/office network. With the ability to connect four ethernet connections, it has plenty of room for expansion, and doesn't take up a huge amount of room.
I used this to connect my new laptop to my desktop PC. A complete novice to networking, I made sure I had everything I needed before I started, or so I thought. It later turned out I needed an extra ethernet cable which wasn't provided with the router, as my Cable modem used a USB connection, not ethernet (it did state this in the instructions, but I didn't look at them on the CD until I started the installation). One short trip to town later, I tried again, with more success.
In the box was the router itself, the power supply, an ethernet cable and the installation guide CD. As I am running Windows XP I didn't need to install anything, so after following the very detailed step by step instructions found on the CD, I was almost done.

After spending nearly two days unsuccessfully trying to get it sorted, I called in a professional friend who does this for a living, and who took one look before turning off my Sygate Pro Firewall, and then everything was sorted just fine. It was very difficult to configure the Sygate program to allow network access to the desktop, so I have uninstalled it. My friend assures me that the firewall security included with the router will be more than sufficient to protect my network, and I have also discovered that the Windows Firewall included in the XP Service Pack 2 will allow the network to work with no problems either.
On the plus side, the router can be configured to use 64bit, 128bit or no encryption to protect your connection from unauthorised users. Windows will also automatically configure a hex key for added security, which then needs to be entered onto each computer trying to use the connection, or you can use your own key. The router has a default channel setting which is compatible with other D-Link products, i.e. their wireless network adaptor range 'out-of-the-box' as they put it, but my network adaptor isn't D-Link and I had no problems (firewall aside, that is!). You can also configure the settings to an existing network.
I think this is a good choice for the price (around £40-50), you don't need to be an expert to install and configure it, and the performance I've had since getting it all working is great. Although the maximum outdoor range is supposed to be around 400m the best I've had is about 250m (bearing in mind there were a lot of obstructions in the way) but the indoor range is great, I have excellent reception in most places, and I can't see me ever needing more than 100m indoors for home use anyway.
I would recommend this product to anyone who wants wireless connectivity, it's well worth it (as I'm writing from the garden now!)

Review of D-Link AirPlus XtremeG+ DI-624+ - wireless router
Advantages: Easy & Quick Setup, Cheap, Game Mode Disadvantages: Walls Constrict Wi-Fi Range
I bought this router on eBay for £20. I used this to connect 2 computers to the same internet connection to save running another lead through to the new computer. I plugged the router in and connected it up to a computer and read the instruction manual which is very useful. It comes with a wizard that gives you step by step instructions on how to configure the router with your internet connection, so I ran this and it worked fine.
The instruction ... ...set up different restrictions on the router to allow certain computers to connect to it wirelessly. After about 20 minutes I had both computers working with the internet connection. I also wanted to use this router to connect computers together wirelessly to create a network so games can be played on individual workstations. It is so easy to setup that the instructions were not needed. With around 3 computers connecting to the router on different ...

I have to say that for being a novice networker at the time it was daunting to say the least when i got the router home and unpaked it but following the step by step instructions made it easier..... (having a technophobic wife pecking your head while your trying to help her get on the internet doesnt help) After following the well laid out instructions in the glossy manual and getting all the info that the router needed ...

Advantages: Well it works.... and thats a start... Disadvantages: none as yet....
Well maybe its just a case of me not being too much of a wizard on computers of maybe Im just not too bright. This is the third wireless router I have tried to set up and touch wood so far it has been working great... for 2 weeks.
Two netgear ones have let me down previously which is par for the course reading other reviews, but this one seems to be ok, even though it was the cheapest in the shop.
It normally has ample speed for two wireless connections ... ...10meg connection which it does struggle with, particuarly when I am using a file sharing program with multiple jobs going at once. Luckily it is my daughters connection which seems to suffer upstairs so it does not effect me that much.
I am just so glad to have something that works. Nice and small so tucks into my cupboard as well. Very little complaints at all
Go on. Give it a go. ...

Advantages: Full featured Wireless Router Disadvantages: Requires TCP/IP knowledge to make full use of router
The D-LinkDI-624 has proved to be the reliable router as advertised, but only after the latest firmware upgrade.
I've had this router for over a year now. The reason for its purchase was to setup a WiFi network during a conference. The DI-624 proved very disappointing upon purchase, when most of the wireless devices had problems connecting to it. All this changed when D-Link issued an updated firmware, which may be obtained from their website.
PERFOMRANCE
The latest experience with this router came during February 2005, during another conference. This time the router was setup once and forgotten during the whole of 15 days that the conference ran. Performance was very good. The DI-624 has a 4 port LAN connection as well. To these ports I had a total of 30 desktop computers connected (though other switches). At times there were ...
