Advantages: Very quick and easy to set up, Disadvantages: Shorter than claimed 100m Range, Some configuration problems in Windows XP, No Linux Support
After recently purchasing a new computer, I decided to jump on the bandwaggon of Wireless Networking. After a rather failed attempt with a previous setup , I discovered the new offering from D-Link - the DWLG520. I bought two for the fairly hefty price of about £120, and they installed without a problem.
However problems started occuring when one of the computers was moved slightly further away, the cards failed to find each other. After a quick e-mail to the D-Link customer support this soon was fixed, by decreasing the speed to around 48Mb/s. This didn't make much of a change to the performance. However when i decided to move one computer downstairs over the opposite side of the house, the cards failed to find each other even by reducing the speeds to 1Mb/s, this distance is much less than 100m. Any e-mails sent to D-Link, were no ...
Advantages: Good reception, good drivers, good file transfer speed Disadvantages: No Vista support
Having become very disillusioned with the stability of USB Wireless devices while doing more than just web browsing, I decided to turn to a PCI solution.
My home router supports 108Mbps MIMO, so bought a PCI card which can make full use of this - namely the D-LinkAirPlusXtremeG GWL G520M.
At the time of writing this, they're available for £40-£50 from most online shops, but Tesco.com bucks this trend and is selling it for £19.97 plus £4.85 for next day delivery. A totally flawless purchase, which also earned me some Clubcard points.
The device installs easily into a spare PCI slot. The enclosed design adds to the feeling of quality.
The drivers on the CD are the latest available, and identical to the ones from Windows Update's online repository.
Having owned 2 Atheros based USB devices before I was a little bit nervous ...

Manufacturer's product description
The AirPlus XtremeG DWL-2100AP is an enhanced high-performance 802.11g wireless Access Point for use indoors. This device supports wireless networking speeds of up to 108Mbps (Turbo mode) on the popular 2.4GHz public frequency, while providing seamless interoperability with existing 802.11b wireless equipment. The DWL-2100AP can be configured to operate in any one of the 5 modes: (1) as a wireless access point, (2) a point-to-point bridge with another access point, (3) a point-to-multi-point wireless bridge, (4) a wireless client or (5) a wireless repeater. With these built-in functions, the DWL-2100AP gives you the flexibility to configure the device to meet your environment's requirements.Enhanced security is provided with Wi-Fi Protected Access to authorize and identify users based on a secret key that changes automatically at a regular interval. Used in conjunction with a RADIUS server, WPA employs TKIP (Temporal Key Integrity Protocol) to change the temporal key every 10,000 packets. This insures much greater security than the standard WEP security, which requires the keys to be changed manually. The DWL-2100AP supports 802.1x authentication for protection against network intrusion. Used in conjunction with a RADIUS server, this function provides a means to verify the identity of the client before an access to the network is granted.
