Why a switch?
Switches are the backbones of a network. They are the devices that at all the computers in the office have no choice but to use. They are a great tool in modern computer networks. The switch allows communication between computers, servers and network printers.
What does a switch need to do?
1. Connect multiple computers
2. Be Fast
3. Be Reliable
4. Be user Friendly
So will the DES1008D model handle the pressure?
1. Connectivity
The DES1008D has a total of 8ports witch means that you could have 8 computers connecting simultaneously, or you could have a variety or pcs, servers, printers, and other networks switches connecting to it.
8ports will happily support a small office or home based network.
2. Speed
So we have found out that it has 8ports so what will ...
in is running at 100 or 10 Mbps. Before this feature came along you had to tell a switch which it was, and if you got it wrong it wouldn't work. Also, running at 10 meant ALL the ports had to run at 10, even if they were 100 devices. The FS108 solves this issue by being very clever, and very useful!
Very Very Clever
You can have what is called a "straight" cable, where the pins match up at both ends, or a "crossover" cable where 4 pins (2 twisted pairs) are reversed. You'd do that if you wanted to connect two computers directly without a switch. If you plugged a crossover into a normal switch it wouldn't work, because the pins would be wrong. This switch tests to see if it's a crossover and sorts it all out for you, so it will ALWAYS work! Very very clever, very very useful.

Made from quite thick metal and spray painted ...
Advantages: small compact size, metallic body, passive cooling=no noise Disadvantages: gets a bit hot during summer
using Windows 98/2k/xp over samba, which unfortunately only 50-60% efficient. Transfering files over FTP is gonna be miles faster than samba (windows file and print sharing)
They are all auto MDI-X on every port, so it doesn't really matter if you';re using a cross over cable or not, as the switch will sort it out
The LEDS on the ports indicate 1000mb or 100mb and the status LEDS on the panel indicate 10mb connection and blinking = activity.
It's silent, as it's all passivly cooled, unlike 3com switches/hubs, which is good when you have these in the bedroom!
It's solidly built and i really can't fault it, and I feel it's worth the money as most other switches are all plasticy and cheap looking/feeling.
1gb transfer over samba takes around 3-4 minutes... which is fast - as you'd expect for gig ethernet.... and ftp transfers are ...

Manufacturer's product description
The D-Link DES-1008P enables users to easily connect and supply power to devices such as wireless Access Points (AP), IP cameras and IP phones via the common network cables. The switch is completely unmanaged, so no configuration is required and installation is quick and easy.Four out of the eight ports on the DES-1008P support the IEEE 802.3af standard for Power over Ethernet (PoE). Each of these ports can supply up to 15.4W, up to a total PoE budget of 56W, allowing users to attach IEEE 802.3af-compliant devices without requiring an additional power source. Compliance with IEEE 802.3af means that when a compliant device is attached, the switch automatically adjusts the power supplied to that device. For non compliant devices, a PoE adapter such as D-Link's DWL-P50 can be used to still allow the switch to be the power source.
