D-Link DES 3550 - switch - 48 ports

The DES-3550 switch forms an Ethernet workgroup stack with flexible Gigabit uplinks. Traffic runs along the units in this virtual stack through the full-duplex Gigabit interfaces... more...and your usual network wires, dispensing of the costly and cumbersome stacking cables. Without any stacking cable, cable distance restrictions and physical stacking limitations, your stack can include units that are located anywhere on the network, minimizing the impact of any single point of failure. The DES-3550 switch simplifies and speeds up your management tasks, as multiple switches can be configured, monitored and maintained from any workstation running a web browser through one unique IP address. The stack is managed as a single object, with all units identified by a single IP address. You can see a Tree View of the members of the stack and a network topology showing the locations of the units and their link information. This simple yet powerful web-based management eliminates the need for you to install expensive SNMP network management software. You can add units to up to 32 switches per stack, of any model in the xStack range. With embedded SIM, you can expand your Ethernet stack to include L3 core Gigabit and chassis-based switches to accommodate your network growth. The DES-3550 provides a complete set of security features for connectivity and access control. These include Access Control Lists (ACLs) based on MAC address, switch port, IP address and/or TCP/UDP port numbers, 802.1X user authentication and MAC address control. The DES-3550 also provides central management for administration access via TACACS+ and RADIUS. In addition, when implemented in conjunction with a D-Link NetDefend firewall, this switch -as a stand-alone or in a stack- is able to automatically quarantine any host displaying abnormal behavior by stopping the port connected to it. This mechanism, D-Link's ZoneDefense, provides proactive network security by preventing viruses from spreading through the network and thwarting harmful network attacks. Without a NetDefend firewall, you can still rely on the Safeguard Engine feature to protect the switch against traffic flooding caused by virus/worm outbreaks. The DES-3550 switch provides extensive VLAN support including GARP/GVRP, 802.1Q and asymmetric VLAN to enhance network security and performance. Bandwidth control allows you to set a traffic limit for each port to control the traffic volume from the edge of the network. 802.1w Rapid Spanning Tree with fast convergence of less than 15 seconds and a redundant power option increase the reliability and availability of your virtual stack. The DES-3550 implements a robust set of multi-layer (L2, L3, L4) QoS/CoS features to ensure that critical network services like VoIP, ERP, Intranet and video conference are prioritized. Priority queues for 802.1p/TOS/DiffServ are supported, with classification and marking based on MAC SA/DA, IP SA/DA, and/or TCP/UDP port numbers.

Dlink Strikes Again

Advantages: 8 Port
Disadvantages: Static.

Dlink DES 1008D Why a switch? Switches are the backbones of a network. They are the devices that at all the computers in the office have no choice but to use. They are a great tool in modern computer networks. The switch allows communication between computers, servers and network printers. What does a switch need to do? 1. Connect multiple computers 2. Be Fast 3. Be Reliable 4. Be user Friendly So will the DES 1008D model handle the pressure? 1. Connectivity The DES 1008D has a total of 8 ports witch means that you could have 8 computers connecting simultaneously, or you could have a variety or pcs, servers, printers, and other networks switches connecting to it. 8 ports will happily support a small office or home based network. 2. Speed So we have found out that it has 8 ports so what will ...

D-Link DSL-504 ADSL Router 4 Port

Advantages: Pick up a bargain ?
Disadvantages: Only 4 ethernet ports ?

Another review from me for a discontinued item, but may be useful if you're loking to pick up a bargain item on ebay... The D-Link DSL-504 ADSL Router has a built-in ADSL modem - plugs directly into your ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line)-enabled phone line, and with its 4 port 10/100Mbps ethernet switch, allows connections to lots of things (check out my other reviews for what it's connected to...). The DCHP server allows automatic allocation of IP addresses to all your network gubbins too - although I've set the IP's for my wireless accesspoint & print server to allow easier access to their brower based interfaces. The DSL-504 has a browser admin interface too for easy installation and setup, just type in the IP address (the default 192.168.0.1, as with most routers, but if it's changed you can always use the command line ...

Belkin 2-Port KVM Switch With Built-In Cabling

Advantages: Advantages: Cheap, all in one solution
Disadvantages: No manual overide or audio support

stops autoscanning and lets you use the currently selected PC. The Belkin claims support for scrolling mice but I did find sometimes one PC would start up without recognising this facility if it wasn't the currently selected one when booting up and in extreme cases, wouldn't recognise the keyboard and mouse at all. Previous KVM's I've used send the PC fake 'There's a keyboard and mouse here' messages when not selected and it seems this unit does not, which is a pity. Conclusion The Belkin 2 port KVM is a well built unit that works nicely and provides a great way to save desk space and the cost of a second monitor, keyboard and mouse. The long leads are useful and despite the niggles with scrolling mice and the lack of manual switch. I'd say this unit is worth considering at this price if you can live with those shortcomings ...
