Manufacturer's product description
The D-Link DES-5024 is a high performance 24-port 10/100 Mb Ethernet/Fast Ethernet NWay auto-negotiation modular Switch with SNMP/RMON management, and optional Gigabit uplink connections and ISDN Router. It is designed to provide maximum departmental network performance that is scaleable 10/100/1000 Mb connectivity with 5G bps total bandwidth. The DES-5024 is targeted at workgroup, departmental computing environments in medium to large businesses. The DES-5024 provides 24 dedicated NWay auto-negotiation connections. Each connection automatically identifies and determines the correct transmission speed and duplex mode of the attached device on each port. This feature eliminates unnecessary traffic and relieves congestion on critical network paths. The DES-5024 provides a dynamic buffer allocation that employs network-load balancing for faster data handling. The DES-5024 allows a choice of either standard store-and-forward or user selectable Cut-through architecture to ensure low latency and high data integrity. In addition to the SNMP support, the DES-5024 features an embedded RMON agent to support enhanced traffic management and analysis, and a port configurable VLAN support to provide broadcast protection.

Why a switch?
Switches are the backbones of a network. They are the devices that at all the computers in the office have no choice but to use. They are a great tool in modern computer networks. The switch allows communication between computers, servers and network printers.
What does a switch need to do?
1. Connect multiple computers
2. Be Fast
3. Be Reliable
4. Be user Friendly
So will the DES 1008D model handle the pressure?
1. Connectivity
The DES 1008D has a total of 8 ports witch means that you could have 8 computers connecting simultaneously, or you could have a variety or pcs, servers, printers, and other networks switches connecting to it.
8 ports will happily support a small office or home based network.
2. Speed
So we have found out that it has 8 ports so what will...

Advantages: Pick up a bargain ? Disadvantages: Only 4 ethernet ports ?
...Another review from me for a discontinued item, but may be useful if you're loking to pick up a bargain item on ebay...
The D-Link DSL-504 ADSL Router has a built-in ADSL modem - plugs directly into your ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line)-enabled phone line, and with its 4 port 10/100Mbps ethernet switch, allows connections to lots of things (check out my other reviews for what it's connected to...). The DCHP server allows automatic allocation of IP addresses to all your network gubbins too - although I've set the IP's for my wireless accesspoint & print server to allow easier access to their brower based interfaces.
The DSL-504 has a browser admin interface too for easy installation and setup, just type in the IP address (the default 192.168.0.1, as with most routers, but if it's changed you can always use the command line...

Advantages: Easy to use, easy to install Disadvantages: closeness of the ports.
...Netgear are well known for their networking equipment and it is for this reason I want to tell you about a great piece of kit. The 24portswitch.
24ports of networking capability.... But what does that all mean???
Ok, let me tell you about what a network is.
Even the internet is just one big network. it is simply just a collection of computers that are connected together and can communicate. Simple!
But, how do you connect them together? Its not like they shake hands and have a chat is it?
Well in a way, that is what they are doing but using some extra hardware to do this.
To put a computer on a network, it needs a Network interface card or NIC. This plugs into your computer's motherboard. Its basically similar to installing a graphics card or sound card. You then need to connect the computer via the NIC card to...
