Dlink DES 1008D
Why a switch?
Switches are the backbones of a network. They are the devices that at all the computers in the office have no choice but to use. They are a great tool in modern computer networks. The switch allows communication between computers, servers and network printers.
What does a switch need to do?
1. Connect multiple computers
2. Be Fast
3. Be Reliable
4. Be user Friendly
So will the DES 1008D model handle the pressure?
1. Connectivity
The DES 1008D has a total of 8 ports witch means that you could have 8 computers connecting simultaneously, or you could have a variety or pcs, servers, printers, and other networks switches connecting to it.
8 ports will happily support a small office or home based network.
2. Speed
So we have found out that it has 8 ports so what will ...
Advantages: Pick up a bargain ? Disadvantages: Only 4 ethernet ports ?
Another review from me for a discontinued item, but may be useful if you're loking to pick up a bargain item on ebay...
The D-Link DSL-504 ADSL Router has a built-in ADSL modem - plugs directly into your ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line)-enabled phone line, and with its 4 port 10/100Mbps ethernet switch, allows connections to lots of things (check out my other reviews for what it's connected to...). The DCHP server allows automatic allocation of IP addresses to all your network gubbins too - although I've set the IP's for my wireless accesspoint & print server to allow easier access to their brower based interfaces.
The DSL-504 has a browser admin interface too for easy installation and setup, just type in the IP address (the default 192.168.0.1, as with most routers, but if it's changed you can always use the command line ...
Advantages: Advantages: Cheap, all in one solution Disadvantages: No manual overide or audio support
stops autoscanning and lets you use the currently selected PC.
The Belkin claims support for scrolling mice but I did find sometimes one PC would start up without recognising this facility if it wasn't the currently selected one when booting up and in extreme cases, wouldn't recognise the keyboard and mouse at all. Previous KVM's I've used send the PC fake 'There's a keyboard and mouse here' messages when not selected and it seems this unit does not, which is a pity.
Conclusion
The Belkin 2 port KVM is a well built unit that works nicely and provides a great way to save desk space and the cost of a second monitor, keyboard and mouse. The long leads are useful and despite the niggles with scrolling mice and the lack of manual switch. I'd say this unit is worth considering at this price if you can live with those shortcomings ...
Product Information for "D-Link DGS 3100-48 - switch - 48 ports" »
Manufacturer's product description
The DGS-3100-48 switch includes 2 dedicated HDMI stacking ports, each providing 5 Gbps stacking bandwidth. Up to 6 units can be stacked up in a linear or fault-tolerant ring topology, for up to 20 Gbps overall system bandwidth in full-duplex, bi-directional mode. A stack can be made up of any switch of the same family, providing up to 24 SFP fiber links. Units can be gradually added to the stack to accommodate growth. In addition, 802.3ad Link Aggregation allows multi-Gigabit links to be created between switches or to servers. The DGS-3100-48 includes many security features including Access Control Lists (ACLs), 802.1X Port-Based/MAC-Based Access Control and 802.1X Guest VLAN so that network access is available only to authorised users. To enhance network resilience, the DGS-3100-48 supports Spanning Tree protocols, including 802.1D, 802.1w and 802.1s for redundant bridge paths. In addition, a unique feature, D-Link Safeguard Engine, allows administrators to configure thresholds that limit the impact of packet flooding to the switch's CPU typically caused by virus/worm outbreaks. This increases the switch's reliability and availability.Network administrators can define throughput levels for each port to manage bandwidth. Fine granularity down to 64 Kbps can be achieved. For Quality of Service (QoS), the switch supports 802.1p Priority Queues and packet classification based on ToS, DSCP, MAC, IP, VLAN ID and L4 protocol types, to ensure that critical network services like VoIP, ERP, Intranet and video conference are prioritised. The switch also provides IGMP snooping to control multicast transmission and port mirroring to facilitate diagnostics. The DGS-3100-48 supports standard-based management protocols such as SNMP, RMON, Telnet, Web GUI and SSH/SSL security authentication. With DHCP autoconfiguration, the administrator can pre-set configurations and save them in a TFTP server. Individual switches can boot their IP from the server and load in the pre-set configurations.
