First, this is not a review of wireless networking of an office or multiple PC's, but simply my experiences on setting up the internet on my workshop PC (in my shed)
I chose this model, as it is used by my mates company, and I was able to get it from him for a few quid, but they are on eBay cheap enough at the moment. Firstly, I know very little about networks, I can strip a PC into its component parts and rebuild it blindfold, but networks confuse me, so no technical babble here.
Setting up was fairly straightforward; My PC had a built in LAN port, so I plugged it in as per the instructions, installed its drivers and watched the little lights flash. Ok. Now, time for the internet.
No chance.
Page cannot be displayed.
Cue 6 hours of reading, re-reading and looking at settings so baffling that I got lost. I set up the user name and password as the book said; I set up the routers own security passwords and everything else but still no connection.
It must be noted that at this point I had not yet uninstalled my "normal" broadband modem, so I reconnected that and headed off to the d-link website for more information, it was there I found a forum specific to my router, and was able to ask a few questions in there. Within an hour, somebody had replied and was able to show me a page they had set up that walked you through the whole thing step by step.
It seems a lot of the settings on it you just leave alone, all you have to do is follow their instructions and then enter the WEP key were they tell you, (guess what I had not entered?) and that was it. I removed my old modem and software and away I went.
Then I went downstairs to my shed to set up the other end. Erm… ok, now what? I had bought a little wireless USB "dongle" and assumed I just plugged it in, and that was it? Nope.
It detected the network, but the signal strength was very low.. odd, as the base unit is only about 60 feet away upstairs, and it has two antenna on it. I went back upstairs and moved the router to the other side of the room and went back downstairs.
It was still low, but I clicked the little balloon that windows showed up, entered the WEP key as asked and bingo.
So there I had the internet in all its glory on my sheds PC, and then it stopped. "Network unavailable" said the message. Back upstairs I went to find the router was off. No lights, nothing. And "Network cable unplugged" staring at me from my PC
A bit of checking showed the power supply was not working, so I went in search of a new one, this is when I discovered that a new replacement PSU was almost the same price as a complete router, and even 2nd hand was hard to find, eventually I tracked one down, but it still cost almost the same as a new package.
Anyway, since that day I discovered that my PC upstairs can be switched off, as the router works independent of it and transmits the signal downstairs as long as it's plugged in.
Another problem I found was it interfered with our wireless CCTV system, but a quick channel change on the router stopped that.
It still has a weak(ish) signal, but at the end of the day it does work, so if you can find one cheap enough, it should work ok for the average home user.

Dlink D-link is a fast growing network solutions company that offer high quality products at an affordable price. I have nothing but praise for d-link and there products. The rougher in question is a great piece on engineering. The rougher specifications are great considering its age. It came out in around 2002 and still keeps up with most of the modern roughers. 22 megabits per second is defiantly enough for any broadband connection the standard ... ...22.0 mbps connection there is no problem. The rougher also come with a built in modem which will accept any speed ADSL connection, so if you have a 0.5mbps Connection or an 8 mbps connection the modem will support the link. Also if the connection ever drops for some reason the rougher will automatically attempt to reconnect. The other great thing is that the rougher acts as a hardware firewall which will stop any unwanted intruders.
The built in ...

Dlink
The Dlink router 604+ is a nice piece of kit. Well worth the money it is cheep to purchase it gives the ability to share broadband with up to 14 computer all tough I wouldn’t recommend it due to the speed of broadband 500k divided between 14 work out about 36k which means if 14 people where using broadband at the same time it would run really slow. It would recommend only putting 5 computers on the wireless link and if you want any more use ... ...added hard ware firewall, which should keep most viruses out especial if you accompany it with a good version of anti virus. You don’t even need to have a broadband modem, as this is already part of the router. Advantages: Cheap, spec is comprehensive, web management works Disadvantages: drops connection too often, awkward to upgrade firmware, annoying whine
I bought this kit (along with an included DWL G122 USB dongle; see my separate review) as a package from Ebuyer mid 2005 for £58. I had read all of the reviews I could reasdily lay my hands on and thought it was a bargain at this price and to a degree it is. However...
Looking at the specification (see the blurb pasted at the bottom) this is a nice piece of kit for little money. It is firmly in the mainstream of wireless kit still, giving 54g performance and DLink are still releasing firmware updates (it is well over a year since product release). I've found that in practice it works well...when it works. But to get back to the beginning...

Hey there you jolly, lovely people! I'm here to tell you all about the D-LinkDSL G604T!
I'm a little technologically impaired, so what does this do?
It's simple: this gives internet access to multiple computers (you have to have a internet set-up with a company first, like BT).
Wow, sounds great! But how fast can the internet speed go up to with this thing?
You can get an internet speed of up to 100.0 Mbps, although it varies depending on which service you subscribe to, and the speed of your computer.
Is it easy to set up?
Yes, it is quite easy to set up, as I believe you get a CD which helps you in the installtion process. If you are finding it hard, you can receive help at most good computer stores.
Are there any set-backs to this thing?
Yes, there is one major set back: the internet can stop working sometimes (I think ...
Advantages: Excellent price and easy set up Disadvantages: Not the best looking Router on the market
I must say I was more than a little concerned about my first time trying to set up a wireless network but this product made it very easy and straight forward.
The router comes with everything you need including a network cable and line filter.
All I needed to do was enter my ISP username and password in the boxes provided and it did everything else. I was up and running within 20 minutes!
Being able to carry my laptop around the house and get an internet connection anywhere is such a bonus in a house full of kids!
My place of work also has same one and the signal strength is excellent over some distance and will easily cope with large houses or offices.
I purchased the product from ebuyer for £54.04 plus vat and delivery. ...

The DSL-604+ Remote ADSL Router is a versatile all-in-one networking device that provides high-speed broadband Internet connection, wireless user access and dedicated LAN bandwidth server connection. Designed to link a branch office to a corporate network or to the Internet, this device incorporates a built-in broadband ADSL interface, IP packet routing capability, cost-saving Internet functions, wireless LAN access and Fast Ethernet server switch ports, all in one compact-sized box.The Router connects your office to a remote network or the Internet via a broadband ADSL line. An interface supporting G.dmt, G.lite and auto-handshake for different ADSL flavors is built into the Router. This allows your office to flexibly hook up DMT full rate DSL service (8Mbps), or make use of the economic G.lite rate. Data can be efficiently transferred between two Windows or UNIX remote networks with little bottleneck on the remote link. The Router also supports transparent bridge, allowing non-IP data to pass between two remote sites.Cost-saving Internet functions like NAT and DHCP server are built into the Router, permitting your entire office o share one single broadband line and one single ISP account. The Router automatically assigns IP address for all office users, while masking their addresses on the Internet. This kind of firewall makes it more difficult for a hacker to target a computer on your network. With a built-in IEEE 802.11b wireless LAN interface, the Router connects all wireless users together while providing them with the broadband WAN and Internet access. Wireless LAN speeds are up to 22Mbps, with backward compatibility with earlier 2Mbps IEEE 802.11wireless networks. Seamless roaming from cell to cell and across Access Points, as well as WEP security is supported. This Router comes with four built-in 10/100Mbps switch ports, providing instant connection to Fast Ethernet servers and workstations.
