Back in March 2007, I bought my first laptop. This brought the number of computers in our house up to a grand total of three (my own desktop, my daughter's and the new laptop). It struck me that perhaps it was time to get networked. A hard wired network was out of the question, as I didn't want to start drilling holes and running cables everywhere, so a wireless solution seemed to be the way to go. I did a little research, as I'm not too au fait with this side of computing (though I have assisted in installing one before). Eventually in Pissy Werld (sorry, PC World), I found this package from D-Link. It consisted of the wirless router itself and a seperate antennae (destined for my daughter's bedroom PC). Also in the box were installation CDs for each of the two bits of hardware, a power supply and an additional ethernet cable..

Purchased it from Amazon and tried on our line.
Main problem was: disconnecting!
ADSL is perfectly fine and I am also an IT Technician.
Old modem and others 'still' work fine and they are back in place.
I was trying to modernise and get ready for ADSL2 an this modem should have worked fine on normal ADSL too and it gets dangerously hot in my view and after 2 emails with D-Link they did not reply any more to me avoiding the problem.
So, I sent it back to Amazon and asked for a full refund - not Amazon fault and thinking that it was at 'only' £. 24.99 and no postage, that should have been a warning !
I hope for D-Link sake, it was only mine faulty and it is not a normal way or working for this modem.
It does not mean other modems are faulty, mine was and I asked D-Link to send one out (just the modem) and pick up ...
Advantages: Pick up a bargain ? Disadvantages: Only 4 ethernet ports ?

The D-Link DSL-504 ADSL Router has a built-in ADSL modem - plugs directly into your ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line)-enabled phone line, and with its 4 port 10/100Mbps ethernet switch, allows connections to lots of things (check out my other reviews for what it's connected to...). The DCHP server allows automatic allocation of IP addresses to all your network gubbins too - although I've set the IP's for my wireless accesspoint & print server to allow easier access to their brower based interfaces.
The DSL-504 has a browser admin interface too for easy installation and setup, just type in the IP address (the default 192.168.0.1, as with most routers, but if it's changed you can always use the command line ...

Packet processing for IPSec security is done entirely by the hardware, giving you high-speed secure links to your remote corporate office and trusted supplier networks. Internet connection is through a DSL or cable modem. An RS-232 port is provided for ISDN TA/analog modem connection backup. 40 IPSec tunnels for data confidentiality, integrity and origin authentication to 40 remote sites. Data encapsulation, encryption and authentication options include IP ESP, DES, 3DES, MD5 and SHA-1. This enables you to carry out VPN applications, including Intranets, Extranets, and remote user access. Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) monitors inbound packets and allows or denies access to your LAN on rules you can set. Denial of Service (Dos) prevents hacker attacks, plus log file to log up to 32 event messages showing possible attacks. Virtual Server provides mapping to re-task services to multiple servers.
