Why did I choose it?
I'd had a broadband connection for quite some time and used a free modem that came from my ISP. There had never been any problems with the free modem, but it only allowed one computer to connect through it. We had bought a cheap second computer and wanted to be able to share files, printers, and most importantly the broadband connection. I was attracted to the D-Link DSL-904 as it was advertised as a "Wireless ADSL Router Kit". Since installation, I have gained quite a bit of knowledge on the technologies involved, but at the time of purchase, non of the other information available meant anything to me! The idea that everything I needed to connect two computers together came in a single box was very appealing as it could only make the whole process easier.

I finally decided last week to order the D-Link DSM-520 from Komplett.co.uk at £172 inc VAT & del. Reasons for buying : I wanted to stream HD movies, photos and music.
Reviews have been mixed, admittedly, but seemed to indicate that this was the best of the bunch. I also looked at the Freecom and the Pinnacle before deciding. The DSM-520 arrived on Monday 4th Dec 2006, and was installed very easily and quickly. That part at least was painless. I used D-Link's own Media Server and also a demo version of TwonkyVision. I couldn't get M$ own Media Connect to work, and I still can't figure out why.
Getting wireless working was strangely easy from my Netgear router, and I was offered WPA or WEP. So, at first I used WPA wireless, just for a gag I suppose, cuz I knew it wouldn't work with HD due to the limited bandwidth. It ...

device is cost. I paid around £85 for the starterkit to connect two pc's. (nickknows.com or ebuyer.com). This is similar for a wireless modem/router. However the distance between our pc's is fairly large and there are several walls/floors inbeween. I was unsure wether a wireless connection would work, they can be hit and miss, and a long wire was impracticle. I therefore chose this 'power over ethernet' device and have found that it works very well. The connection is constant, the speed is very good, and I'm very pleased with it.
On the technical side, devolo is compatible with windows 98, 2000, ME and XP. Mac OS and Linux. Transfer rate is up to 14mb p/s (much faster than most current broadband speeds). You can also use this for online gaming via an xbox or playstation.

Two adapters are required to start with, then more can be added. PowerLine offers a solution if you can not or prefer not to use Wi-Fi technology in your premises. Adapters are ready to use straight away by simply plugging into ordinary power sockets.
