Advantages: Wireless N technology is good for speed and data throughput... Disadvantages: ...but if the adapter keeps dropping out (like this one does) then it is useless
my net experience.
So...that's alright then. I need not have kept rebooting. All I had to do was pull.... what? You mean that's not a design feature? Ok. In that case it is not up to the job - I want reliability?not a lack of ability.
I summarise the D-LinkDWA-140 as follows:
D-Links Woeful Adaptor
Dodgy Wireless Ability
Doesn't Work Always
Dis Was Awful
Don't Want Another
Don't Waste Any (money on this adapter)
Recommend it? That will be a 'No', then
ps I researched the drop out problem on the internet - apparently it is well known so I am not alone in this - you have been warned!! ...
Advantages: Works at long range, easy to install, powerful Disadvantages: Bit more expensive than some
I bought one of these when I got fed up with the Belkin wireless we had in my husband's laptop. We gave up trying to use it wirelessly, plugged hi laptop into the modem and moved the PC, using it with this external wireless adapter The Belkin was half the price (laptop wireless adapter) but only had an excellent signal in the same room as the router. Grr. It didn't pick up any signal at all downstairs (the wireless router was upstairs in the spare bedroom).
So I shelled out almost £50 for this, in the hope it would improve things, and we moved things around. Fortunately it did.
D-link are a reliable manufacturer of wireless products and I've bought several things from them. Our router was D-link, which might affect the quality of the improvement - perhaps it helps to have both router and adapter from the same company. It worked ...
Advantages: Fast, good range, powerful, not too expensive for what you get Disadvantages: none so far
with as well: I can download a half-hour TV programme from 4OD in about a minute, and my teenage son can play on-line games on his laptop without it jerking. It copes well with Skype calls too, and the web cam - it's not jerky either.
You don't buy a wireless router for its beauty, but this is a perfectly decent, if slightly space age looking, bit of kit that doesn't offend the eye. It was a bit of a faff to install and get working (it took half an hour and a couple of swear words), but I'm a bit thick about these things sometimes.
It supports both WEP and WPA encryption, uses two firewalls and is something called draft 802.11n compliant. This is obviously really seriously a lot faster than 802.11g, but I don't understand it so I'll stop now before you sus me out. It's a Good Thing though.
I'm really pleased with it and it has ...
