starting out or for an established business looking to bring a managed solution to the desktops. This switch provides 4 Gigabit uplinks for connection to a Gigabit backbone or a server. The DES-1228P provides built-in 802.3af Power over Ethernet (PoE) for sites needing to run power over the network cables. Each of the 24 Fast Ethernet ports provides up to 15.4W power for devices such as wireless Access Points, IP phones and cameras, allowing them to be deployed in difficult places where AC power outlets are not readily available. With powerful switch fabric and abundant processing memory, the DES-1228P provides wire-speed high performance for departments and workgroups. This switch includes support functions such as IGMP Snooping, QoS, 802.1Q VLAN, port mirroring, Spanning Tree and port trunks to enhance performance and network resiliency. In addition, the switch supports 802.1p Priority Queues, enabling users to run bandwidth-sensitive applications such as streaming multimedia and VoIP on the network. These functions allow the switch to work seamlessly with managed VLAN and 802.1p traffic on the network. The switch provides MAC address filters to screen access to the network. It supports 802.1X Port-based Authentication, allowing the network to be configured with external RADIUS servers. Additional features like the D-Link Safeguard Engine protect the switch against traffic flooding caused by virus/worm outbreaks. Switch configuration and management are provided by the SmartConsole utility or a web-based GUI. With full colour graphic pictures, diagrams, and easy to understand navigation menus, SmartConsole is an easy way to access the switch from a local PC. It includes useful features like auto-discovery for automatic display of all DES-1228/1252 switches running on the network, Monitor List for status and trap messages and Trap View for system events, device boot up, abnormal data transfer errors and illegal login. The web-based GUI allows switch access from any location on the network or from a remote site, using a web-browser. It allows extensive switch configuration setting, which can be backed up for duplication in other switches. In addition, built-in MIBs allow administrators to integrate the switch with other third-party devices for management in an SNMP environment.

DlinkDES 1008D
Why a switch?
Switches are the backbones of a network. They are the devices that at all the computers in the office have no choice but to use. They are a great tool in modern computer networks. The switch allows communication between computers, servers and network printers.
What does a switch need to do?
1. Connect multiple computers
2. Be Fast
3. Be Reliable
4. Be user Friendly
So will the DES 1008D model handle the pressure?
1. Connectivity
The DES 1008D has a total of 8 ports witch means that you could have 8 computers connecting simultaneously, or you could have a variety or pcs, servers, printers, and other networks switches connecting to it.
8 ports will happily support a small office or home based network.
2. Speed
So we have found out that it has 8 ports so what will ...
Advantages: Pick up a bargain ? Disadvantages: Only 4 ethernet ports ?
Another review from me for a discontinued item, but may be useful if you're loking to pick up a bargain item on ebay...
The D-Link DSL-504 ADSL Router has a built-in ADSL modem - plugs directly into your ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line)-enabled phone line, and with its 4 port 10/100Mbps ethernet switch, allows connections to lots of things (check out my other reviews for what it's connected to...). The DCHP server allows automatic allocation of IP addresses to all your network gubbins too - although I've set the IP's for my wireless accesspoint & print server to allow easier access to their brower based interfaces.
The DSL-504 has a browser admin interface too for easy installation and setup, just type in the IP address (the default 192.168.0.1, as with most routers, but if it's changed you can always use the command line ...
Advantages: Excellent quality. loads of features, easy to install Disadvantages: None
Netgear are well known for their networking equipment and it is for this reason I want to tell you about a great piece of kit. The 24portswitch.
24ports of networking capability.... But what does that all mean???
Ok, let me tell you about what a network is.
Even the internet is just one big network. it is simply just a collection of computers that are connected together and can communicate. Simple!
But, how do you connect them together? Its not like they shake hands and have a chat is it?
Well in a way, that is what they are doing but using some extra hardware to do this.
To put a computer on a network, it needs a Network interface card or NIC. This plugs into your computer's motherboard. Its basically similar to installing a graphics card or sound card. You then need to connect the computer via the NIC card to ...
