Advantages: Very quick and easy to set up, Disadvantages: Shorter than claimed 100m Range, Some configuration problems in Windows XP, No Linux Support
After recently purchasing a new computer, I decided to jump on the bandwaggon of Wireless Networking. After a rather failed attempt with a previous setup , I discovered the new offering from D-Link - the DWL G520. I bought two for the fairly hefty price of about £120, and they installed without a problem.
However problems started occuring when one of the computers was moved slightly further away, the cards failed to find each other. After a quick e-mail to the D-Link customer support this soon was fixed, by decreasing the speed to around 48Mb/s. This didn't make much of a change to the performance. However when i decided to move one computer downstairs over the opposite side of the house, the cards failed to find each other even by reducing the speeds to 1Mb/s, this distance is much less than 100m. Any e-mails sent to D-Link, were no ...
Advantages: Wireless N technology is good for speed and data throughput... Disadvantages: ...but if the adapter keeps dropping out (like this one does) then it is useless
my net experience.
So...that's alright then. I need not have kept rebooting. All I had to do was pull.... what? You mean that's not a design feature? Ok. In that case it is not up to the job - I want reliability?not a lack of ability.
I summarise the D-LinkDWA-140 as follows:
D-Links Woeful Adaptor
Dodgy Wireless Ability
Doesn't Work Always
Dis Was Awful
Don't Want Another
Don't Waste Any (money on this adapter)
Recommend it? That will be a 'No', then
ps I researched the drop out problem on the internet - apparently it is well known so I am not alone in this - you have been warned!! ...
Advantages: Easy to set up and use, Stable, Good support Disadvantages: A bit out dated
website. D-Link is quite a big company for networking equipment so I am not worried about it disappearing like some smaller hardware suppliers. The website is quite quick with fairly decent download speeds. Not always top speed downloads but acceptable.
Documentation for the card on their website seems to be for a slightly different model labelled 'Xtreme', but I'm guessing they are identical other than the different label. The manual is very thorough, explaining all the terms you could ever worry about even if you won't ever need to know what most of them mean. There are pictures and diagrams where appropriate to help you understand how to set everything up.
VERDICT
It's a nice and simple card. It is a bit outdated now as there are newer wireless specifications available and most, if not all current laptops have built-in wireless ...
