Just after Christmas my father bought a DVD Recorder and as I was considering putting all my old 8mm tapes of the kids onto dvd I was interested in this. It soon became apparent that the best way to do this was actually purchase one for myself. So I did abit of internet price looking then I went on a hunt.
Asda - I had noticed the price of my fathers was lower elsewhere but asda won't price match unless its in a published magazine.

Comet - couldn't even find a salesman!
Hughes - a lovely salesman who wanted to know what I was looking for. His first question was did I have cable/sky/freeview at home. The reason for this is that if you do then that will 'plug' into this particular dvd recorder and recording programmes is fine. If you still have terrestial TV you are better spending more money on one with a 'built in digital tuner' ready for ... more

Currys - salesman just seemed to want a sale, he'd have sold me anything. Comet - couldn't even find a salesman! Hughes - a lovely salesman who wanted to know what I was looking for. His first question was did I have cable/sky/freeview at home. The reason for this is that if you do then that will 'plug' into this particular dvd recorder and recording programmes is fine. If you still have terrestial TV you are better spending more money on one with a 'built in digital tuner' ready for when we have to all go digital. We then had a discussion around make/price etc. I decided on the Daewoo.

It has 2 scart sockets - so you can use scart to put tapes/dvd onto dvd however the scarts are at the back and I found it a pain keep taking the socket out when using my camcorder. However it also has an AVF socket on the front.
It has been great at recording from the TV and putting my 8mm, my friends VHS C tapes and even an old video of old cinetapes onto dvd - what fun watching all those memories again.
The downside to recording the TV with the digibox via scart is that once its set to record you cannot turn the channel over but then if you are recording whilst you are out thats fine.
Viewing dvds This is really easy. The quality is good. The pause feature is really good, if like me, you are often interrupted. Unlike my old player it doesn't cut out after a period of time but seems to stay on pause indefinately. There was nothing worse than having to find where I was again!
It takes DVD+R/RW & DVD-R/RW Recording which is a bonus.
On the back it has 2 scart sockets for TV set connection and set top box/free view/camcorder etc. It also has audio out sockets, enabling me to wire it up to my stereo for better sound.
Should you need it it has parental control. It works on Region Code 2 It came with a remote control (with batteries), scart lead, RF coaxial cable. Size approx 42cm w x 5cm h x 32cm deep Recording time - 2hrs (normal) 4hrs (long play) Cost - in the sale and at £69.91 (Hughes)
I am more than happy with this product - simple, easy to use and great for recording or viewing.
Advantages: Bargain price. Easy To Use. Multi Region Capable Disadvantages: None significant.
This is really an excellent DVD recorder. I purchased this DVD recorder around 6 months ago and have never had a problem with it. My main reason for buying was the price. I found a brand new one online for just £60 and with the range of features it seemed a bargain. I was so impressed with the dvd recorder that I bought a second one for upstairs.
The DVD recorder can be made region free by simply:
1.Turn your machine on with no tapes or discs present. ... ...button. 3.On your remote control press the right navigation arrow button( next to the enter button) until you get to the System Info Screen. 4.Read the on screen list and you should find that it ends at "Loader Version" 5.On your remote control type in 1 1 0 1 - This should then add an additional item of Region Code to your list. 6.On your remote control type in which ever one of the following that you need.... 0 - For region free. 7. On your remote ...

Advantages: Good design. Easy to use remote and menus. Disadvantages: No 5.1 surround sound decoder. It doesn't play computer rcorded DVDs
I owned it for two years then the tuner stopped working rendering it a DVD player. Then all of the AV out connections stopped working. Whilst I could have repaired it, the part was £76 compared to the £60 price of the whole machine! It had a well set out menu good picture quality and the remote worked well. No 5.1 surround sound output, just stereo, but then most DVD players and recorders still don't have 5.1 surround sound decoders. It is a sturdy, ...

this when paused for too long...but his switched off after being paused for only 2 mins!!!
He's taking it back for an exchange...it may just be a dodgy unit...but it's certainly put me of getting this model!
But other than that, he says it works fine.
Meanwhile...I find myself very drawn towards :
