Advantages: Low cost, comfertable, and high spec alternative. Disadvantages: Poor depreciation, and unjustly poor street cred.

Step up the Daewoo Leganza. I own one, I am 23 (not a fogey) and I am very suprised with it, Still - 3 years on. Why? I'll tell you. When I was looking at purchasing a car, I had roughly £16k to spend. Now, I WANTED a second hand BMW 520. I WANTED a Toyota Celica. Why did I not purchase one of these vehicles you ask? well, there are many reasons, here are just a few:

To be honest, this car fits snuggly into a class of its own. Its not a prestige car, and its not a family car. Its not a sports car, or a company car. Its not a hybrid either. Confused? well here is the deal... You can't own a prestige car without the prestige price. you can't own a family car, and expect may luxury's. you can't own a sports car and get a comfy ride, and well, you can't own a company car that doesn't look like every other car you pass on the motorway.

When I was looking at purchasing a car, I had roughly £16k to spend. Now, I WANTED a second hand BMW 520. I WANTED a Toyota Celica. Why did I not purchase one of these vehicles you ask? well, there are many reasons, here are just a few:
BMW: The only BMW's that came into my price range, were 2-4 years old, with N O T H I N G ! a tape player, rubbish allows, sandpaper seats, and all in all, a tacky affair. Being such a fan of BMW's, it actually hurts me to say that.
TOYOTA: Mmmm, I was 20, a 2.0 Litre Celica would have set me back approx £2,500 in the insurance dept. No thanks.
BOTH: Despite seeing a couple of cars I was interested in, the dealers were rude to me (young, so therefore will not buy anyhing kind of attitude), and really messed me about. You know the sort, my custom doesn't matter as its such a piddly amount, sort of thing.
So, I took my custom elsewhere. I went to my local Daewoo dealer (I was passing), and the first thing that struck me, was the different style of selling. I was not pressured, made to feel bad because I didn't put a deposit there and then, hurried, or any of that stuff. I took my time, test drove a few of their cars, and am happy to say, found one I really liked.
Compared to the 1.4 Fiat Bravo S I previously owned, it was a dream. VERY spacious, comfertable for long journeys, the ride quality was very smooth (maybe not compared to the prestige cars, but see above points). the 2.0 Litre engine I found was very pokey for such a large car. It came with nice alloys, large wheels, air con and climate control, electronically adjustable drivers seat (cool), abs, speed proportional power steering, electric window / mirrors / sunroof, and for a few bob more, I got a 10 cd player in the boot, full leather seats, and luxury car mats.
in 1999, this cam to a grand total of £15,995 (CDX). You cannot buy this spec, level of comfort and size forless than £20,000 in any other car. Pleased? Very. and you can more than likely buy the same spec car today, for alot less, due to Daewoos price reductions.
Its serviced upto 3 years, 60,000 miles, I get AA cover, 3 year warranty (and this is even for the car mats! which I had replaced recently!) oh, and just to help a poor 20 year old who can't afford a BMW or Celica, I got my first years insurance FREE.
So, I enjoy overtaking other cars on the motorway, country roads, and generally being a nuissance around town. I drive a car which is pretty rare. Not many other people are driving the same car as me, which may explain the suprised look on their face when I can still overtake them at 60, no probs.
Only down point, the brakes could do with uprating for that size engine / car, but apart from that, a very VERY good alternative to prestige / family / sports or company cars.
So, you remember saying its a Daewoo earlier.... So What?
Advantages: good value Disadvantages: lack of prestige
...at the top of the Daewoo range and was developed on a design rejected by Jaguar and launched in the UK in 1997.
Styling is attractive, and though not exactly radical - you can see from certain angles that the designer was trying to impress the Ford bosses of Jaguar, but although a sensible design the Leganza can't be accused of being overly conservative. The Leganza is extremely well priced and packed with every conceivable extra and therefore is ...

...2007, a black S plate Daewoo Leganza CDX. 2 litre engine, grey leather interior, 10 slot CD player, air con, electrically adjustable drivers seat and electric windows all round. 60k on the clock, 10 months MoT and no bodywork problems.
It felt good on a test drive, easy to find a comfortable driving position and had plenty of room in the rear and boot. I didn't particularly want a large saloon, but this one felt alright. The garage promised to change ... ...having been done. £1200 and a week later it was on my drive.
I can't say it's been an outstanding 12 months in any way. Staid, boring, reliable - apart from a new battery to replace the original, just after the severest of cold days. Fuel consumption has been poor - around 30 mpg on a run and I'm not heavy footed. 38 mpg was the best I ever got, once!
Although this probably says more about the dealer I got the car from that the car itself, the ...

Advantages: Good Look,Reliable performance, good runner Disadvantages: heating system,A/C system
I own a leganza and i am extremely happy about some things and I am extremely disappointed with a few aspects.
The Engine is great, it performance is as good as a Honda or a Toyota. the pick up, the sustainability of the engine are good. The fuel consumption is above average and affordable. The seats and other in-car features are good too. On a long drive, the car is excellent. It stays up and the engine doesnt get worked up. Its easy to maintain ... ...speeding up or a gradual pick up of speed the engine responds equally. The suspension is not too close to the road and neither too high. This aspect can be viewed as both good and bad aspect. The good being that its neither too high nor too low, and the bad aspect is, its neither too high or too low. The wide body allows the car to set itself on the road very comfortably. It acts as an catalyst when in high speeds, controlling the car is quite easy ...

Advantages: Soo many extras Disadvantages: Fuel consumption, looks, lack of prestige
Okay, so the Leganza is NOT particularly a car of great beauty. But if you are interested in a car which is reliable, loaded with extras and excellent value for money then you could do a lot worse. The automatic version is not overly powerful however when you kick it down to accelerate you notice the power much more. During urban driving the petrol disappers as if by magic but on the open road its not too bad. The interior is spacious and comfortable ... ...£18000 the CDX-E comes with all the bells and whistles you could hope for - Air Con, Sat Nav, CD, Climate control, cruise control, traction control, speed sensitive power steering, twin airbags, ABS etc etc etc. Then there is the after sales service - if you buy the car new you get three years ( or 60000 miles) of free servicing, athree years' free AA cover, free insurance for the first year etc etc. All round worth the money - I wiould recommend ...

Quick review of Daewoo Leganza 2.0
I have owned a leganza for about two years now and it has been a reliable and surprisingly quick car. It comes with many extra features as standard and for a 2 litre engine has a good fuel consumption. The tax and insurance are about average. Unfortunately it dosnt look as good as it drives, looking like a bit like a jag from the back and a standard daewoo from the front, im 23 and get some stick for driving an 'old mans' car from friends but its spacious, comfortable and overall affordable. ...
