I started reading this book one night and read a few chapters. I knew i was going to enjoy it as it was nicely written, easy to read, and already had me wanting to know more.
This book is about a woman - Cathy Glass - who is a carer. She and her two children Adrian and Paula live in a house with another girl Lucy who Cathy fostered and took into their family. Cathy is divorced so there is no father in the house. She is very qualified at what she does and hasn't fostered for a a few weeks as she likes to take breaks inbetween each child to give herself chance to sort herself out.
Cathy gets called to a meeting one day. The meeting is called because there is a 7 yr old child, named Jodie who needs a home, either with a foster carer or in a residential unit. She has been moved round alot and hasn't spent very long at all with each foster family. Cathy is confused as interested to know why she doesn't stay at the foster carers long. She is told the child has behavioural problems and other problems due to the fact that they think she may have been abused by her parents. Cathy decideds to take on this new challenge of having Jodie as her foster child.
Jodie arrives at Cathy's house and does not settle in very well with the other children. She kicks them and shouts at them and wants everything her own way. She slowly starts to disclose the abuse that has happened to her. Although she never seemed completely happy she at first seemed to settle a little into her new environment. The abuse that she discloses is shocking and if you don't like reading this kind of thing it's not for you, however if you find it interesting...it is.
Jodie starts to get really bad nightmares that seem real to her, that all come from the fact she was abused. It seems she's starting to settle a little bit more so Cathy finds a school for her to go to. Slowly Jodie starts to deteriorate. She becomes quiet and withdrawn and isn't interested in anything. As Cathy is trying to get Jodie's parents prosectuted she sees doctors and psychologists. They think Jodie may have this personality disorder as she seems to talk as different people. You will understand if you read the book!! In the end she gets no better and they send Jodie to High Oaks. This is a residential unit for children who have these problems. It's in the country and the people who run it are lovely.
There is lots going on in the story the whole way through. It is a fantastic read of a girl who just needs to be loved and doesn't understand whats normal and what isn't. She needs normality in her life and routine, and because of what her parents and other people did to her she finds it hard to appreciate anything.
Remember...this a true story and is therefore upsetting, sometimes in a bad way because of the abuse she's suffered and sometimes in a good way because she is now being loved. It is very emotional.
I read most of this book in a full day, i just couldn't put it down and wanted to know more constantly!! Highly recommended!
Advantages: Interesting and informative Disadvantages: That things like this happens in this world
If like me you love to read True stories then this is the book for you. The main thing that attracted me tothis book was the front cover, Plain simple and contains a picture of a young girl.
From reading the first chapter I had to make mor time to read it as I knew this was going to be a good read.

Advantages: Brilliant Book Disadvantages: If you don't like these type of stories I advise not to read it.
I had run out of books to read, and fancied a change, as I always pick up the books that write of neglect, child abuse etc, etc, etc.
I really don't know what drew me to this book, maybe it was the cover, or the price, but as soon as I saw it I bought it.
I got the kids into bed and picked it up to read a couple of chapters, I read 15 that night, thats 163 pages, I just needed to know more.
Heres my review:-
Cathy Glass has been a foster carer ... ...Adrian and Paula are hers and Lucy a foster child. This is her account of an eight year old girl called Jodie.
Jodie had had five carers before she entered Cathy's family, life, heart and mind.
She had been on the at risk register since birth, but had ony been admitted into care 4 months previous after starting a house fire, how, she set fire to the family dog. With her current carers, she threw terrible tantrums, was aggresive and destructive, ...

Advantages: Truly remarkable and utter love and compassion from this author Disadvantages: Shocking and upsetting - utterly heartrending
A friend leant me this book and I must admit I wasn't sure whether it would be that good. I have read a lot of childhood memoirs starting off with A Boy callede It and found that a lot of them are very alike, a bit "woe is me". Yes I know they have all had a bad childhood, but I stopped reading them after a a while because they were all very similar.
I must admit I was amazed by this book. The book is written by Cathy Glass who is a Foster Carer. ... ...violent, aggressive, and has already been through numerous foster families when her last hope is Cathy Glass. Cathy is "pushed" into taking on Jodie as a last resort after she has been rehomed many times. If Cathy wouldn't take her on then she would be forced into a Children's Home.
Cathy decides to give Jodie a chance, and what a time she has. The patience shown by Cathy in the face of such adversity is truly aspiring.
Jodie frequently soils herself, ...

Advantages: Doesn't hide anything, very true and heart felt Disadvantages: Could be too much for the younger readers
Well i was told about this book and was also told that it was quite graphic, which is definately true. Nevertheless an amazing book. I am in my teens and would only recommend it for other teenagers if they are mature enough to handle such a tragic story.
The book is about a foster carer who decides to take on what she is told could be an extremely hard case. A little 8 year old girl who has had around 4 carers in as many months, has challenging ... ...no child should, along with other things such as smearing feaces across herself and self harming, can Cathy help her change and lead the life she always should have?
I have to say that by page 100 i was already finding it hard tp carry on as i couldn't believe what i was reading, and that this was actually true and so many children are actually put through this. A truly amazing story that shows what foster carers are put through sometimes and feel ...

Advantages: You wont be able to put this book down once you start reading it. Disadvantages: Has got loads of sad parts.
Ive got to say, I bought this book a couple of weeks ago because I wanted it to take on holiday but a couple of days before we went I just wanted to read a couple of pages to get the jist of the book. Well big mistake........I could not put it down, I read the whole book in 2 nights, it is just one of those books where you have to know what is going to happen next. If you are into true stories then you will love this book, but if you get upset easily ... ...this book are quite sad and I suppose could be quite distressing to some people.
The Book is based on a young girl called Jodie who has not had a very good start to life and needs some real love and care. The social services want to find her a home that she will be able to stay in for a long time as she has been moved around a hell of a lot.
Jodie has behavoral problems due to what she has been through, so foster carers cant really handle her behavour. ...

Advantages: A fantastic read and a great insight into what others go through today Disadvantages: It's quite a long read so may not be for people who read hardbacks
I sincerely recommend this book to anyone who appreciates reading life from another person's perspective. This book will have you captivated right from the first page and I'm sure you won't be able to put the book down.
CathyGlass will take you on a journey of a quiet and polite young boy named Tayo, a child she fosters, who's had to endure a horrifying childhood filled with neglect. CathyGlass is a fantastic role model, showing people suffering like Tayo that through your struggle there will always be someone in the world to help and support you.
Being based on a true story it's quite hard to believe so the story does hit home quite hard. I'm a great fan of CathyGlass and the other books in her series, Cut and Damaged.
The book has a great story line and it would be a shame not to purchase! ...
