Free Parking

Advantages: Strangely compelling
Disadvantages: A pretty dark subject

Buy one get one free offers are quite possibly the greatest invention shops have given us. For all of us, it’s a chance to get something for nothing. But for the brave, it’s a world of opportunity. After all, if you already have one thing you’d really like in your hand, something you’d willingly pay the full price for anyway and they’re offering you something else, you’re getting it for nothing. So you have nothing to lose.

It was ...
...my hand recently. This particular buy one get one free offer was in my local Oxfam. Having chosen a book I knew I’d like, I could afford to take a chance on my other purchase. At worst, my total outlay would be about £1.50 and I already had something worth £6.00 in my hand, and something I knew I was going to enjoy. If I was going to be that far ahead, I had less than nothing to lose.

Noah Arkwright, unfortunately, does have something ... more

good holiday reading.

Advantages: strong characters, good story
Disadvantages: slow start, can be confusing

Dangerous Parking is Stuart Browne's first and only novel, as he died shortly after completeting the novel, and it was actually published after his death. There is no confirmation of this, but I had the feeling that this book is, to some degree, autobiographical. There are things in the story which echo the brief information about Browne at the front of the book, and as he died at a fairly young age (there is a photo), and the book details a man's ...
...this is Browne's story, to a greater or lesser extent. 'One man's struggle against cancer and alcoholism'. Sound like a pretty boring, self-indulgent book, doesn't it? It isn't. It's a sharp, witty book, overflowing with intimate description, personal feelings, fear, love, greed, life and death. The central character, Noah, one of the most real characters I've come across. He is both endearing and irritating, and at various points of the book you ...

Not So Great

Advantages: An interesting idea
Disadvantages: You can't feel sympathy for the main character

of humour as Nick Hornby's writing. It's tough to put this book into a category. The story of a life being told as it nears an end is quite similar to Stuart Browne's "Dangerous Parking" or James Frey's "A Million little Pieces". "The Greatest Gift", however, doesn't have the same knack at making you feel sympathy for the main character, as he's responsible for his own position, rather than having been put there by illness or addiction. Matthew Viss isn't the most sympathetic of lead characters, either. Although his desire to give and to help is admirable, his inability to give enough devotion to those closest to him is not. Matthew seems to be somewhat self indulgent, yet has no self control and I couldn't find myself warming to him at any stage. His life was different enough to be vaguely interesting without being fascinating ...
