Sparklehorse

Advantages: Atmospheric and chilled out
Disadvantages: Some weaker songs in the album

Sparklehorse are a band that I had never hear of, and to be honest the name put me off ? however one day I heard one of their songs playing and it really intrigued me into listening to some more of their work. I have since bought two of their albums: ?Good Morning Spider? and ?Dreamt for Years in the Belly of a Mountain?. ~~The Band Sparklehorse is made up of the main guy Mark Linkous along with some of his friends. His touring band also change with some albums. Some help in this album comes from DangerMouse, Sophie Michalitsianos (Sol Seppy) and Stephen Drozd. There are many various artists that influence the band, including Tom Waits (featured also on the album) and Daniel Johnson, who he looked to for his music when things got tough. Linkous? first band was called the ?Dancing Hoods?, and after two albums, then formed ...

Dark Nights Of The Soul

Advantages: insightful, fascinating book
Disadvantages: not in database

approach me beaming like I?m one of his lost sheep. ?Welcome, Doc!? he hisses in an amusing, though reverential, stage whisper. We warmly embrace. ?Reading Thomas Moore?s book, Care Of The Soul, must have really impressed you as I?d hoped. I?ve been thinking about you while reading his new book, Dark Nights Of The Soul, and want you to have it now. Stay for mass if you?d like or go to my office, it?s unlocked, and pick it up. Inside there?s a brochure describing all the ways you could get involved in our community. God?s working in wondrous ways in your life! Bye now!? He hurries away and I just stand there stunned, letting it all sink in. Why would he think I?d like to read a depressing book like that? And what?s this about getting involved here? I have to find out what he?s talking about, forget the mass, and soon I?ve apprehended ...

The Dark Forest of the Soul (In a Dark Wood - Marcel Moring)

Advantages: original, clever, meaninful, deep, occasionally funny
Disadvantages: gimmicky, demanding, pretentious

the brim with drunken bikers and spectators, although flashbacks (and flashbacks within flashbacks too) abound. Throughout that night, throughout a town that became a peep-show and a nightmarish dream, from bar to bar, from the funfair to the electric bull, and into the woods that weave through the town and surround it, wanders Marcus Kolpa who has returned to find his lost first love, Jacob's daughter, Chaja. And so does wander Jacob, possibly dead or possibly alive, led by a mysterious figure, mystical and profane both; a pedlar calling himself the Jew of Assen. "In a Dark Wood" is a rich novel, overflowing with phantasmagoric imagery, dream and hallucinatory sequences and abundant symbolism. Inter-textual references recur throughout the text (with the Divine Comedy and Ulysses being the two most clearly identifiable reference ...
