My parents live very near to the David Austin roses centre, which is near to a little village in shropshire called Albrighton. The centre is delighful, there is an indoor shop, outdoor garden centre, tea room and of course their famous rose gardens.
The gardens are free to visit and really quite exquisite. They are beautifully laid out and maintained and full of the most amazing varieties of roses. There are 4 themed gardens, The Long Garden, The Victorian Garden,The Renaissance Garden and The Lion Garden to walk around, and the scent whilst doing so is amazing. Staff are very helpful if you need to ask about what plants would be most suitable for the environment you wish to put them in etc. etc.
I'm not really up on flowers, or gardening so I go just for the aesthetic beauty. There were however lots of gardening fanatics walking around who were enthused by the varieties and breeding of the roses, who would have thougth gardening was so scientitic!
We sometimes take visitors across to the centre, as its a lovely afternoon out. We walk around the gardens and then go to the tea room where you can have cream teas, the scones are apparently very nice, I can't eat wheat so haven't tried them, and per person tea and scones comes to about £5. There is also a selection of cakes and a healthy lunch menu.
The business is run by an award winning father and son team and they have one of the largest rose breeding programmes in the world. They show at Chelsea flower show, so if you are into roses and can't make it to Shropshire that would be one to look out for, or alternatively if you can't get to either you can mail order roses online from their website: www.davidaustinroses.com. Be warned roses don't come cheap!
All in all well worth a visit if you are ever in area.
