Advantages: Another David Gemmell book... Disadvantages: Slightly darker than your usual Gemmell book.
...Another great book in the Drenai series of novels by David Gemmell. (see "Legend" & "Waylander")
A good storyline, but as always with the Drenai series,it is set too far apart from the rest of the books, maybe several hundred years after "Legend". No Druss and no Tanaka Khan, (they'd be dead by now I should think) In fact there are no great characters from any of the other Drenai books.
The only thing that lets you know that it's actually a part of the Drenai series is that it is set in the same locations as the others. Again David Gemmell brings a host of powerful new characters into another great tale of overwhelming odds to be conquered by the forces of good. This is slightly darker than the other novels he has written, with the odds looking almost too impossible.
There are Demons everywhere, but only certain people can see them...

Advantages: Compelling, Fantasy, Strong Characters Disadvantages: Hard to visualize the setting at first
...David A. Gemmell was born in London, England in the summer of 1948. Having spent time working as a bouncer at nightclubs in Soho, his first novel, Legend, was published in 1984. It wasn’t until 1986 that he became a full-time writer and since then has produced almost thirty novels.
In my opinion, Gemmell is one of the finest living fantasy writers today, if not one of the greatest in history; and these sentiments are echoed throughout all facets of the literary world. Winter Warriors is the eighth of nine books in Gemmell’s Drenai Series, all of which are centred on Drenai and its proud army.
This book itself is set during the decline of the army of Drenan; the once heroic veterans are discarded by king, Skanda, and seem to lose all sense of worth. However, these veterans are to once again save Drenan from the ill-fated alliance...

Advantages: The "facts" behind the band Disadvantages: the godamn writing style of the author
...I have recently finished this book which I bought some time ago - with my renewed interest in the band documented here I thought I would give it another go.
All I will say is that if you just have a passing interest in this band give it a miss.
If you want the facts behind the formation of the band and the recording of the songs it is quite good. The book details the upbringing and backgrounds of all four members of Talking Heads - David Byrne,Tina Weymouth,Chris Frantz,Jerry Harrison - and how they went on to form one of the most influential bands of the last 25 years.
In this respect the book is good - it offers insight into the band dynamics and the otherwise unknown love/hate relationship between Weymouth & Byrne. I knew there was animosity there but this book suggests, through interviews and observations from those close...
