Review of Fraternity of the Stone - David Morrell by  bobfibber

Advantages: Excellent attention to detail of subject matter
Disadvantages: Would like to see more books in the series and this is out of print at the moment

...A 'Can't put this down' totally riveting book This was the 1st book of David Morrell's that I have read and it was recommended by a friend. The story is excellent and the authors knowledge of the subject matter is well informed and creates a gripping atmosphere. The scenes come alive allowing you to clearly picture the action. The characters can be identified with and you can really get inside their heads. The story centres around a retired assasin that has taken refuge in a monastery for the past 8 years. There is action a-plenty and the main characters develop well with the help of flashbacks into the past to reveal important events. There are a couple of twists that really keep you guessing. The knowledge of assasin/espionage etc is first rate and a real eye opener. Don't be put off by the fact that David Morrell wrote the First... Read review

Thrillers?
Review of Thriller: Stories to Keep You Up All Night - James Patterson by  jimmijamie

Advantages: some good short thrillers
Disadvantages: some terrible ones too

...this compendium, but there were also some truly awful ones as well. Fans of thrillers may or may not love this book; I'm a huge thriller fan and I neither enjoyed nor disliked the stories on offer here. I'll go back to James Patterson's thrillers and give these a miss next time. List of authors: Lee Child James Grippando J A Konrath Heather Graham James Siegel James Rollins Gayle Lynds Michael Palmer and Daniel Palmer David Morrell Chris Mooney Dennis Lynds John Lescroart and M J Rose David Liss Gregg Hurwitz David Dun Denise Hamilton Eric Van Lustbader Christopher Rice Alex Kava Grant Blackwood F Paul Wilson Ted Bell M Diane Vogt Christopher Reich Brad Thor Raelynn Hillhouse Robert Liparulo Steve Berry Katherine Neville Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child Ones to read: Epitaph - J A Konrath The Face in the Window - Heather Graham Operation... The anthology to own
Review of 999: New Stories of Horror and Suspense - Al Sarrantonio by  RichardW

Advantages: A-list horror authors contributing some of their best.
Disadvantages: Not enough mixing of old and new voices.

.... The characters are as sharp as we've come to expect from this author, but the plot seems to lack the inspiration of his earlier work. Enjoyable, though. From the novellas, let me pick out David Morrell's 'Rio Grande Gothic', a fabulous (if not defining) example of Southern Gothic. From a frankly bizarre premise, whereby a police officer is bewildered to find a new pair of shoes in the middle of the road on his route each morning, the plot streamlines along, taking the protagonist through various degrees of obsession and anguish. From the man who brought us 'First Blood', this is a brilliant exercise in building suspense, culminating in a frantically violent ending, with splendidly macabre touches littering each page. Excellent work, in short. Of the novelettes, Stephen King again manages to shudder me out. 'The Road Virus Heads North' shares... Read review
