A mall full of zombies? Sounds fun.
-----The Story-----
You begin as Frank West. A freelance photojournalist out for his next big scoop. You are being flown over a small secluded town in America which has been quarantined by the American Army but no reason given. You witness what appears to be a riot, as you take photos of people being ripped to shreds by others and a woman's last stand as she shoots her on comers before plummeting off a building to her death. You then head on to the shopping mall which appears to be the heart of the town. You land on the helipad where you tell your mate to pick you up in 72hours. Which leaves you 72 hours to "kill" and get your big story, and thus it begins.
From here on you are thrown into a hellish story of twists and turns and the general ability to never complete it, but I'll explain that later.
-----The Controls-----
This is where the game starts to get annoying. With most games, any gamer will be able to pick up the controller and play fairly easily, but even after weeks of play the controls will still baffle you.
When you press the right trigger, you'd expect to attack something, nope its too aim (usually assigned to the left trigger) The left trigger re-assigns the camera so it's facing behind you. The B button is to perform an action A is to jump And X is to attack So all very random, plus there's no option to change the controls which would have been a big help.
-----The Gameplay-----
Right, so you've got 72 hours, which works out to the equivalent of about 10 seconds equaling one minute and you better use it wisely. Thanks to the games very annoying timer the game is almost impossible to complete without a lot of work. And get this, if you die you have to revert to your last save point or re-start the game. That doesn't sound too bad to be honest as your next game will have the levels and moves of the one that just died, meaning it will be slightly easier, "but why would I want to restart when I've got a save game?" I hear you ask. Well because of the games terrible save system you will probably of lost at least 3 hours work as you can only save when you get to a safe-room or a bathroom, which are very scarce and difficult to get to. So if you've just defeated one of the games many disturbing bosses and are low on health you have to fight your way through about 500 zombies without dying so you can save.
The game was designed to be impossible to complete on the first play, meaning you have to spend hours leveling up just to stand a chance. Another annoyance is that you can't be the hero. Let me explain.
Because of the time-limit on Dead Rising, you only have enough time to complete one thing, so here's your choice: Attempt to complete the story Try and get achievements (kill 50,000 zombies is one) Rescue all the survivors Try not to die
The combat is almost enough to revive this game. Basically any item in the mall can be used as a weapon, and being a shopping centre there's a lot on offer:
Guitars Swords Rakes Footballs? Buckets?! Lawnmowers!?! (This one is a bit sick to watch)
Those are all good fun but with the shear number of zombies you need a bit more firepower, like UZIS and KATANAS! But the scarcity of these weapons is ridiculous meaning the odds are greatly weighed against you and you'll often end up fighting the psychopaths (bosses) by throwing cans at them (no joke, this happens). The final problem with the weapons is that they degrade VERY quickly, some literally have about 12kills in them before they dissapear magically from your hands, so in cases where you find the best weapon in the world, you can run into battle with it only to find its got almost instantly and your left surrounded by 200 zombies with no weapon and a save point 3 hours ago.
-----Graphics-----
The graphics are very impressive considering how many people there are in the mall. And the general detail is very good in objects. The blood effects are pretty sick and emotions are created effectively and you can really see the terror in the civilians faces. Unfortunately the zombies are very generic and you'll often see the same zombie meshes stood side by side which is ever so slightly disappointing (not as much as the save system)
-----Sound-----
The sound is used very effectively in the game and you'll often be able to tell what direction enemies are coming from and whether there are others nearby. The groans and moans are very varied and the people to rescue are all very unique in appearance and voice, so well done to the developers for that.

-----Overall-----
The game is very well designed and has some unique features and ideas, but unfortunately the save system and design of the game is not enough to keep me playing till the end. Hopefully the sequel will be better

...never reach the end. However, Dead Rising is another product of Capcom, but has no relation to the Resident Evil series.
While Resident Evil is more like a set of dreadful moments, strained situation, Dead Rising using the Xbox 360’s excellent graphic, going for another way. However, it can’t be said that the game is full of repetitive fighting ... ...just piles and piles of dead body. After taking some pictures of them, he told the pilot to drop him on the roof of a big supermarket and come back to take him after 3 days. From now, his frightful adventure in Willamette begins.
In 72 hours, Frank has to discover about what is going on around him and survive in order to get out of this hell-like town. From the moment that he met some scarce survivors, he felt like being pushed to find out more ...

The Game
~~~~~~~~
The game disclaims all over that it "was not developed, approved or licensed by the owners or creators of George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead™", but that's not to say it wasn't influenced by the cult hit.
Besides pitting the action inside a giant mall, Dead Rising also shares the slow approach of the film. Frank is oblivious to the fact that he is in a zombie game and seeks more rational ... ...attacking a single person. In Dead Rising, however, ten zombies might be attacking Frank, fifty might be cornering the two survivors at the other side, 200 might be snacking on dead bodies and one might be staring, care-free, at a poster, all at the same time. Impressive, even though some things detract from the illusion. Some zombies look alike, loading times, the occasional stutter when more complex enemies appear and, most of all, the "resetting".
Dead Rising is an ... ...host of other awesome games. Dead Rising is no exception to the rule. The general idea is that of most Zombie films, you're stuck in a mall and have to survive. Only there are literally thousands of Zombies on screen at one time. If you haven't played this game, you are missing out.
Can you survive? Use any weapon you can find. Knife, bad, fists, chainsaw, motorbike, machine gun, sniper rifle, nail gun, tomato sauce, hot frying pan and killer wasps!
Advantages: Huge open area to explore, fun gameplay, good replay value Disadvantages: Difficulty will turn a lot of people away, loose controls when shooting
When Dead Rising was released in 2006 it was hyped up as potentially the best game on the Xbox 360 so far. At the very least it was probably the first Xbox 360 game that could be described as truly 'next generation', because this game simply could not have been created on a previous generation console. But how does it stack up three years on and with a sequel on the way? The premise of the game is quite straightforward. You play as Frank West, a ... ...thing to be noted about Dead Rising is that the scale of the game is immense. The playing area is absolutely huge, with plenty of exploring to do and things to find, very much leaving the player with the decision of how to play the game. You can follow the story (which is decent enough, and supported by some good characters), run around chopping up zombies, or just hide in corner. You have three days of game time before you're picked back up by a ...
Advantages: Ridiculously good fun, Silly characters, Lots of zombies Disadvantages: Controls a little awkward, unforgiving save system, needs an HDTV for best results
The videogame Dead Rising manages to take the decades old zombie genre and give it a refreshingly new twist. Gone is the "survival horror" typical of Resident Evil games. Dead Rising is a joyous little jaunt around an enormous mall populated by thousands of zombies. Freelance war photographer Frank West, the hero of our outing, just got an anonymous tip-off about something big going down in a pokey wee place called Willamette in Colorado. Hitching ... ...for doing certain tasks, and Dead Rising has dozens of them. Using Frank's digital camera, you can go around taking pictures of everything and anything, earning 'prestige points', depending on how interesting, violent or downright silly the photos are. Prestige points are just like experience points. Collect enough and Frank levels up, becoming stronger and faster. Such things as disembowelling zombies, rescuing survivors, changing your clothes in ...
Advantages: Reasonable price Disadvantages: freezes, glitches, crashes, noisey, overheats, poor choice of games
not into sports games at all, and I can't play 1st person games as they give me motion sickness. The genre of games we enjoy are rpg's, adventure, horror, family- so our choice for first Xbox360 game was deadrising- a zombie horror game. Couldn't play it, the text was so very tiny- most of it was impossible to read- we spoke with several experts and finally found out there was actually a problem with it, a lot of the games were being returned- as you needed to read the text to play the game to its full extent, we returned ours and got oblivion the elder scrolls- an rpg game.
All appeared to be fantastic- especially on our new HD TV, however it wasn't even 14 days before the console crashed- several times- it would freeze up, or we'd load a game save and be in mid air- in an area of the game that the character wasn't meant to be in ...
When I first seen this game advertised I was very excited to see another zombie game hit the shelves. If you read my House of the Dead: Overkill review you will know that I am a huge fan of the undead! If slapping zombies for a living was possible, I'd be on my way to a promotion!
I first played the demo of 'DeadRising' on Xbox360 and it was quite gruesome and totally fun to get into - but it would be - it had zombies in it!
When Nintendo Wii announced that they were going to release this as 'DeadRising: Chop Till You Drop' I was over the moon! Imagine ripping into zombies using the Wii-mote and Nunchuks! My heart was racing already just thinking about it.
On the Upside the XBOX360 is a great console with outstanding games such as Gears of War, DeadRising, Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion and Rainbow 6 Vegas. The 360s online play is outstanding through XBOX Live which is easy to set up and use and with the recent update which allows MSN Messenger to be used makes it even more user friendly.
Manufacturer's product description
Dead Rising features an open level of freedom and offers a vast array of gameplay possibilities. As part of a real time system, time is dynamic in Dead Rising, marching on whether Frank is actively engaged or if he is stationary. Time also plays a role as zombies become more powerful when the sun goes down. Though they move slowly during the day, the zombies become stronger and faster at night, making it even more dangerous for playersto survive. The unprecedented numbers of enemies come in never-ending waves and consist of a diverse population of former humans that have retained some memory of their previous lives, which is reflected in their behavior and appearance. The variety ofdifferent stores in the mall offers players an endless supply of resources including vehicles, makeshift weapons and more. Players will also encounter other survivors along the way and by helping them can acquire valuable clues as to what has happened.
Features:
Huge environment - expansive indoor and outdoor areas of the mall provide a variety of different locations to explore
Swarm technology allows an unprecedented amount of enemies on screen at once resulting in nonstop, pulse-pounding action
Intense gore and vibrant realism
Anything in the mall is at Frank's disposal
Grab environmental objects like umbrellas and benches to use as improvised weapons
Snatch items from different stores to use as weapons including golf clubs, lawnmowers, fry pans and more
Chow down on various "mall food" to revive health
Real time system - key events happen at certain times and if players are not mindful, important story elements and opportunities may be missed
Use Frank's photojournalistic skills to capture the insanity on film; the better the shot, the better the reward will be
