Rather than languishing in torpor, he has decided to run the London Marathon. But the dangers of his ex-day job are not far away one of the other competitors is lethally strapped with explosives, and if he reduces his pace, all around him will die bloodily. Marchant does his best to avert the slaughter, but there are those who think that he is compromised in his professional life. The CIA ensured that Marchants father was removed from his position as head of MI6, and they are convinced that the apple hasnt fallen far from the tree. Marchant finds himself treated like a suspected terrorist (extraordinary rendition, waterboarding), and things look very black for him. But there are people who are not against him: Marchants colleague (and inamorata) Leila. And, more importantly, new Intelligence chief Sir Marcus Fielding, who is suspicious of Americas apparently unshakeable grip over UK foreign policy.The opening premise (dont drop below a certain pace or risk detonation) may be borrowed from the movie Speed, but thats the only element here that doesnt come up as fresh as paint; Jon Stock has taken the accoutrements of the espionage thriller and given them a bracing wash and rinse. The real achieve, however, is to marry the kinetic energy of the Jason Bourne franchise (thats the films, rather than Ludlums books) with the political sophistication and dyspeptic view of international relations of John le Carré and Gerald Seymour. A few weeks ago I read my first novel by P.J.Tracy which I really enjoyed. So I thought I would give these authors another go over the Easter Bank Holiday.
About the Authors
That wasn't a mistake. P.J.Tracy is a Mother and Daughter writing team who write under this pseudonym. They are PJ and Traci Lambrecht. PJ lives in Minneapolis and Traci in California. Such a lot of the meat that we buy today has very little taste attached to it, sadly the animals are force fed and the meat hits the supermarket shelf as soon as the animal has been slaughtered, hence the meat is given no time to hang to gather taste. If I am buying meat for a special occasion then a visit to my local butchers is on the cards, he can provide some good organic meat but it comes at a high price. Like us all I buy chicken and red meat from the supermarket and just hope that I can inject some flavour into it myself. Posh restaurants intrigue me as I have never really dined in one. I have read the reviews in local and weekend newspapers and slathered over the descriptions of divine sounding dishes. However I have also tutted over the prices commanded by these prestigious establishments. I do know the chefs have more experience and the ingredients used are generally better but is the mark up on meals actually justified?
I got my chance to find out when Duskman became Dr Dusk and graduated with his PHD. To celebrate we went to Stock in Manchester City Centre for a no expenses spared meal and what a delight it was.
