Dead Or Alive 2 [DVD] [2000]

Dead Or Alive 2 [DVD] [2000]

An off-the-cuff Japanese gangster movie with an absurdist streak that shades into ... more

surrealism, Dead or Alive 2 isn't thrown by its
brief to sequelise a film that ended not only with
the deaths of its lead characters but the
destruction of Japan. Takashi Miike--the prolific
auteur whose best-known film is the atypically
considered Audition--brings back his lead actors
in different roles and spins off another strange
shaggy dog tale. The film starts out with a Yakuza
vs Triads gang war in the offing, then sidesteps
into "'Beat"' Miike territory as a couple of
hit-men who meet when they turn up for the same
assassination turn out to be childhood friends and
enjoy a nostalgic wallow as they return to the
orphanage where they met, re-encounter other old
pals and even stand in for some injured actors
putting on a play for the children.  White-suited
and terminally ill Sawada (Riki Takeuchi) and
bleached blond and Hawaiian-shirted Otamoko (Sho
Aikawa) get back to gunplay, committing contract
murders and funnelling the profits into third
world charities, which earns them occasional
angel-wings or transformations back into innocent
children. In constant danger of collapse, the film
keeps pulling surprises: txt msg-addicted killers,
an animated diagram of bullet trajectories through
an unfortunate dwarf's brain. The first film blew
up the country because it couldn't think of an
ending, and this also has a lot of trouble signing
off, with protracted deaths and redemptions for
the heroes. Miike alternates clumsiness and
confusion with exciting and powerful cinema. --Kim

Dead Or Alive 2 on Dreamcast too?

Advantagesgood game | good fighting moves

Disadvantagessame as the PS2 version

"...things you can do on Dead Or Alive 2, you can do Story, which is how you get different costumes for your characters, and I think you get 1 of the unlockable characters as well. Story Mode is like Arcade, and you have some movie Scenes in between. Then there is Time Attack, where you have to defeat as many enimies as you can in the quickest time. Then there is Tag Battle, where you can play with your friend, be on the same team or against each other, ..." Read review

Advantagesfast, very playable, great counters

Disadvantageserrr more characters woudl be nice

"This is the first game I got for my new dreamcast (Ł35 for the dc), and it was my return to consoles. Lets say I was a "bit" impressed. GAME CONTENT A good range of characters, with the usual differences (size, power speed etc). Includes a training mode, vs, tag, team battles, story and survival. So theres lots to do, with the comleation of tasks earning you extra costumes. It's feature laden, and as normal, really shines in 2 player mode, it's ..." Read review

Beat em ups are evolving

AdvantagesAwesome graphics, lots of modes, 4 player tag battles!

Disadvantageslimited lifespan in one player mode

"...from my own review of Dead or Alive 2, which is posted on my site www.dreamcastsource.co.uk It’s not all boobs and babes this time round, although the latter does still play a significant role in the game. Dead or Alive 2 is a 3D beat em up. It’s not quite your average 3D beat 'em up though; Dead or Alive 2 shines through the genre like a diamond in a sandstorm. First impressions do last, so the introduction cut scene of the game ..." Read review

Advantagesgraphics

Disadvantagessome

"Dead Or Alive 2's graphics look quite good although not as detailed as Tekken's. Then you notice just how much is going on and get more impressed as you play. The major difference between the two games is that in DOA2 you are also able to damage part of the background scenery, jump down floors, etc. The inclusion of this in Tekken TT would have further still improved upon this excellent game. DOA2 wins hands down when it comes to the environments ..." Read review

'Bouncy Bouncy'

AdvantagesGood graphics, intense music

Disadvantagesbetter out there

"This game is an improvement in almost every way on the origional with improved graphics sound and gamplay. The fighting arenas have been made bigger now with several levels that fighters can hit their opponents off. the characters have remained the same with some replacements and some new ones. The graphics are excellent with the charactes looking totally rounded and even their fingers being rendered in 3D. I think the game play has improved to even ..." Read review
