To a consumer, manufacturer servicing and warranty procedures can be a minefield. When buying your new car you hardly give a second thought to servicing it, or even worse, you may have problems and break down.
A lot of consumers when buying a car are aware of (as a general rule) a 3 year or 60,000 mile manufacturers warranty. Now this does not mean that all parts are covered for a full three years, this is a very important statement to remember as i see customer after customer who arent aware of this. Items such as clutches/brakes etc, are normally onlt covered for the first year or up to 20,000 miles, the reason being is later on down the line they are classed as a wear and tear item. So please refer to your vehicles handbook and get a clear understanding of what items are covered when trying to make a claim.
WIth regards to servicing and warranty. Most manufacturers state that you do not have to have your servicing carried out with them to keep your warranty intact, however genuine manufacturer parts must be used and the service must be carried out by a VAT registered company.
If genuine parts are not used then you run the risk if invalidating your warranty. For example, a 2 year old car, requires brakes, non genuine brakes are fitted. This would indicate that if a defect within the braking system occured and was as a result or worsened by the non genuine parts fitted then your warranty on the braking system would be invalidated. It wouldnt invalidate your whole warranty however.
Extended warranty companies can be very sly at times. Before buying a policy check what items are covered and more importantley what items are NOT covered. A good thing to also check is their claim limit, some companies only offer a £1000 claim limit which in todays world doesnt cover a major repair so you would end up paying some of the bill yourself.
I hope this has helped you,

Advantages: Some pretty cars to look at in the showroom Disadvantages: Poor after-sales, the ability to 'create' problems with your car (then refuse to accept liabilty)
