With so many cards to choose from you may be wondering if it is still worth having account cards for the big organisations such as Marks & Spencer and Debenhams. These cards are also known as store cards and generally speaking they may only be used at the store named on the card. Some cards like the JJB Sports card have many different partners where you can shop, it goes under the name of a Duet card and you may use it wherever you see the Duet sign. It doesn’t seem to matter if you can use the card at one store or many, as there is one factor that remains the same, high interest rates.
I have different cards for different purposes and it is important when considering applying for a store of credit card what you are most likely to use the card for.
If you have an outstanding balance on a high interest store or credit card for example you may wish to take out a card with a low balance transfer rate. Some cards like the Barclaycard offer extended warranties on some purchases, which may appeal to you. Other cards offer selected travel benefits for example. Therefore, different cards may suit different lifestyles and each one may have a totally unique purpose.
The Debenhams account card is for sole use in Debenhams, you can however use it online at www.debenhams.com and the Debenhams direct catalogue. You can apply for a card in store where you are required to complete a paper application form or on the Internet site. If you visit the website
you have a choice where you can simply submit you name and address details and a paper application form will be sent out for you to complete and sign or you can submit the form online via the secure server. If you submit the form online and your application is accepted it will be completed and posted out to you for checking and signing. The form will need to be returned to GE capital Bank ltd who are the company that provide the credit facility. When taking out an account card you are taking out a credit agreement and therefore you must fulfil several requirements and a credit check will be performed.
You will need to provide your name, address, date of birth, employment and income details. You must be aged18 years or over and have been a UK resident for at least 12 months. You must either be in permanent paid employment with a minimum of 16 hours per week, self employed or retired or in receipt of invalidity or disability allowance. The application will only take around 5-10 minutes online and about the same in store. If you apply in store you are usually given a paper account card that you may use until your permanent card arrives which should be within 8 working days. You will also currently receive 10% discount on all purchases for the first week. When the card arrives it will be Blue in colour with the Debenhams logo and a silver circle in the middle. Your account number will be printed along the front of the card along with your full name. You must sign it on the reverse immediately as you will be assigned a credit limit and as with any credit card it could be subject to fraudulent transactions. It doesn’t appear to have an expiry date so unless you loose your card or it stops working you probably won’t be sent another one for a long time, if ever.
You must produce the card each time you make a purchase in store or enter your details on line. If you forget your card you can go the customer service department in store and they will provide you with a temporary card that is valid for one day only. You will be asked to sign a slip and you will be given a copy for your records. Keep them safe and ensure that you check them against your statement. If you have a balance on your card they will send you a statement every month, otherwise they promise to send you one at least once per year. You have up to 55 days interest free so it will depend on when you make your purchases; you always seem to have around 25 days to pay from when the statement is produced. For example if your statement was produced on the 26th and you made a purchase on the 27th, you would have 30 days before your next statement and then 25 days to pay. You can pay your statement in a number of ways. Direct debit is the most convenient and you can choose to pay the minimum amount or the full balance each month. You can send a cheque direct to GE Capital Bank or pay at any bank. If you use a bank other than your own there may be a fee. You should allow 5 working days for the payment to reach your account if paying by any of these methods. You can also pay at any Debenhams store by cash, cheque or at some stores by debit card; credit cards cannot be used for payment. You can choose telephonebanking or pay your account online via the website, you should allow 24 hours if you pay via the website for the money to be credited to your account.
You can register to check your account details online and you will be given a long user ID number to sign in with and a passcode. I always forget mine, which is a bit of a pain. I can understand the number being a long one so that it is hard for people unauthorised to log in to your account but it’s no good if you have to write the number down. I wanted to log in to my account and I couldn’t remember my details so I telephoned them. They asked me some security questions and they gave me the User ID over the phone, they then emailed me my passcode, obviously they checked the email address with the one registered.
If you don’t want to go to the trouble of registering for online services you can always check your balance by telephoning 08701242412, you can request a series of options and one includes listening to the last few transactions on the account. You can also pay your bill by debit card by simply entering the details.
You may be wondering why I have not yet gone in to detail about the interest rate as I mentioned earlier. I simply wanted to tell you about the card as I feel if you use it correctly then the interest rate doesn’t really matter. I would NEVER use a store card with the intention of keeping an outstanding balance, especially when credit cards are so competitive at the moment. The monthly rate at the moment on the Debenhams card is a staggering 2.08% which equates to 28% APR. Under no circumstance would I be prepared to pay interest on my account. Why do I have a card then?
Simple! It is the benefits that the card offers. Many of you may have heard that the Sainsbury reward card has now changed to a Nectar card. When you use your Nectar card anywhere you get 2 points for every pound spent. These can then be redeemed for various rewards or money off your shopping at Sainsbury, see: www.nectar.com for more details. If you shop in Debenhams and use your Account card you will receive an extra 1-point for every two-pound spent. It may not seem like a great deal but it soon mounts up. In addition to nectar points you receive many special offers throughout the year, exclusive cardholder account evenings and discount vouchers. I have received many vouchers where you can save at least 10% and gain access to the sales before anyone else. I also find it really handy if you wish to buy an unexpected purchase but don’t have the cash. As the interest rate is so high I am always committed to paying the balance off rather than put it on a low interest credit card and having the balance mount up.
Debenhams also have a Gold Card but this is by invitation only. To qualify you generally have to spend £500 in a six to twelve month period. On my recent statements it has been counting down the amount I need to spend. I telephoned yesterday to see if I had qualified. The gentleman I spoke to was very helpful and although I was a little short he transferred me over to Gold Card status. You also qualify automatically if you use the wedding list service.
The extra benefits of a Gold Card are, 20% discount in the café, free gift bags in store, free park and collect service and the privilege of using lockers and Gold Lounges to relax in. I am looking forward to taking advantage of these extra benefits; I’ve been told that my card will be with me within 7 working days. There are exclusive offers available that you can access from the website and you have access to a hotline number where you can apparently shop from the comfort of your armchair.
Either card is worth having providing you use it wisely. I have always found the staff both in store and on the telephone to be very helpful and there are so many ways to pay your bill, access your accounts and gather information you should never have that frustrated feeling when you can’t get your questions answered. The website is pretty useful to card members but you will not find information about the interest rate on there!
I recommend the card if used wisely as the benefits to regular shoppers at Debenhams make it a worthwhile card to have.
The answer to the title is of course that it depends entirely on you and how you use it!

I had absolutely no problem getting a replacement card off them when I lost mine - I was in the running for a gold card and kept getting notices on my statements saying spend 'X' in the next 3 months to qualify - seldom go to Debs now since they changed some of their ranges and think they have forgotten about me.
