I went into Debenhams in Wigan in the North West and was about to spend around £100 pounds on clothes and various other things. Anyway I had remembered watching a programme on store cards. They said that they are excellent to have so long as you don't misuse them. They also said that you received 10% off on purchases when you open an account. I looked around the store and found a little card explaining a little about the card. I noticed that you got ten percent off purchases when you opened an account. I thought that if I did not use it again at least I have saved over a tenner on my purchases this visit, which was a saving in itself.
When I got to the till, the woman on there asked me if I wanted to open an account, I obviously agreed and she said that as I have opened one I could have 10% off all purchases that week, no matter how many transactions I had in any Debenhams during that week.
The woman did all the relevant stuff over the phone, and said that I could have one with a £250 limit. I do not really earn much or but make a high number of purchases regularly, so this was enough for me. Obviously the more you earn the more you can have. The lady gave me a temporary paper card that could be used until I received the proper plastic one, similar to a credit card.
The current APR on this card is 18.9%, which is of course variable.
The monthly rate on purchases is 1.455% and the yearly is 18.9%. The interest on cash withdrawals at ATM and till cash advances is currently at 1.730% per month and 22.9% per annum. If you pay your balance in full and on time every month you will get a maximum of 56 days for new purchases and you will not pay any interest. Unfortunately the interest free period on cash is non-existent so it would not be wise to get money off this as the interest rate really is quite high.
The card took about two weeks to arrive and is just a purple card with Debenhams on it, nothing to write home about. It also came with a load of leaflets and advertisements about Debenhams. There was a useful book that included such offers as if you spend £2 in Debenhams you can get 4 nectar points, but if you spend £2 at debenhams and hand your nectar card and your debenhams card you can earn 5 nectar points. I know nectar points don't add up to much but they will add up and you hopefully will get something for nothing.
My statement also came that told me of how much I owed, and the least amount I could pay which is around £4 or 4% of your total balance although minimum payments are £4. So for instance if you owed £100 you would have to pay £4, if you balance is £60 you still have to pay £4 as this is the minimum payment. A £200 balance would be £8 and so on and so forth. Please note that this has been known to change.
When you have your card you will receive regular letters that will tell you of:- Privilege weeks, where you can have extra savings when you have a card. Sale previews- here you can have a look at the bargains before those who don't hold a card, plus money off coupons. Please be aware that you probably need to spend quite a lot to use the vouchers. For instance if you spent £100 you would get £20 off this is a good saving but you do have to spend the £100.
You can manage your account online where you can look at your balance, view the purchases that you have made, make payments, ask if you can increase your credit limit and contact customer services with any questions. Payments can also be made by direct debit, post, by telephoneinternet banking and also in-store. I have chosen no to take advantage of these so cannot really tell you much about them, I would prefer to pay in-store to make things less complicated rather that signing up to accounts and giving bank detail over the internet.
Warning. I have to warn you though that there are many little things that Debenhams mention in the form you receive that will make them more money. For instance, a £15 charge if your monthly minimum payment does not reach them by the due date, £15 if a cheque, Direct Debit, is not paid when sent to them, i.e. if it is rejected or the cheque bounces. £15 if you exceed your credit limit or cash limit. A £25 if you do not inform tem of a change of address and they have to look for you If your card is stolen and there are purchases made they can charge you up to £50. So if you think about it of you do all these things then lose your card or it is stolen and someone uses it you could be paying up to £110, god I have never worked this out before I am definitely not going to do any of these.
After a few months of having your card you will receive a phone call asking you if you want to take out insurance on your card. This will allow you to get a refund if you lose your item, also if your item gets reduced within 30 days of purchase you can claim back the difference and stuff like this. This was about £14.99 a year which for me, I think is a waste of money and time. I have never bought anything ever that has been reduced within 30 days, so I did not see the point, I thought it was just a way of getting more money out of you. But of course this is left to you if you want to purchase it I just chose not to as I thought it was not worth it.
Debenhams are currently having a blue cross sale; this allows you to get up to 70% off selected purchases. I have been to this sale and there is not much there. I tend to find that it is all the stuff that is left over from the two weeks after Christmas, so it all tends to be a little rubbish as all the good stuff is bought within the first two weeks of Christmas. This sale ends on Sunday 22nd of January.
Store cards can be very useful if you use them correctly, that is paying the total balance every month on time and never spend more than you can afford to pay back. You will reap the benefits from offers, pre sale warnings and extra savings with vouchers that you will receive. Finally please please do not buy thing s that you do not necessarily need as this is not taking advantage of the card.
If misused this card will probably cost you a lot of money and will be detrimental to your bank account. To be honest I do not use mine that often so am not sure that it is worth having beyond getting that initial discount of 10%. It is not particularly advantageous, the interest is high compared to other store cards and the rewards are not that great, also you have to spend loads to really save on this card, the just costs seem to outweigh the benefets.

I liked this review, although it has slightly put me off getting a card now. I have store cards elsewhere, and although the financial bank behind them all are the same I am sure that my store card doesn't 'charge me that much for late payments or even not paying it off at all! Liked it though.

Debenhams Store Card is by the same financiers who manage BHS, TopMan, Burtons, Evans, Asda "Store Cards" - GE - and despite qualifying for (and successfully managing) the first five of the above storecards, (and of course several other credit and Debit cards) I was refused for the Asda Storecard (which doubles as a loyalty card and can only be used at ASDA) - so I continue to use my TESCO Personal Finance card and earn clubcard points on all my Asda purchases . . . . - .................................................................................................... ~ ♥ ~ jes ≈≈≈≈{; -)-{{::::: |||||< ♥♥

Storecards are fine as long as you pay them off straight away. If you don't, the charges are punitive, and you did well, in my opinion, by resisting their 'offer' of insurance. It is indeed an extra way to get money out of you.
Advantages: 10% off first order, discounts and vouchers via card holder events, 56 days interest free credit, free catalogue and advice Disadvantages: high interest charged if you don’t pay your balance off, delivery options could be more flexible, calls to customer service vary depending on where you get routed to....!!
