My partner and I both suffer from back problems, though his are worse than mine and we have both tried different lotions and potions when the need arises to combat the pain and bring some much needed relief. I tend to use deep heat on my back and I really like the warm feeling on my back and it does make me feel a little less tense.
After a recommendation from a friend, my partner brought home a tube of Deep Freeze Cold Gel. From the tube, I presumed this was basically the same as Deep Heat, but it was the coldness that was the pain reliever rather than the heat.I had my reservations over this as I couldn’t see how something cold could provide pain relief. I thought I would try it anyway when the need arose. Sure enough, it didn’t take long for my backache to surface again and so came the perfect opportunity to use my new gel. My partner had used it previous to me and actually raved about this gel. In his opinion, he actually preferred this to the heat gel as he could really feel the benefit of this to his back and it made his back feel much easier and in a shorter space of time than if he had used the heat gel.
This gave me the impression that it was going to be good stuff. When I tried it though, I have to say that I disagreed with my partner. The coldness did nothing for my back that a normal paracetamol tablet wouldn’t have done and I would much rather have the heat gel any day than the freeze gel. The coldness actually made me more uncomfortable than I already was. Due to the fact that it contains paracetamol, it did seem to ease the pain a little after a while but it certainly didn’t feel as effective as the heat gel and I personally wouldn’t use this again. The gel itself has quite a potent smell to it, but then most similar products do too so this one is no different. It is quite a heavy gel, thick gel so is easy to apply without creating too much mess. It is a little bit sticky so although it doesn’t make any mess on the clothing, it does stick to them a little bit which isn’t a major problem, but again, makes you feel a little uncomfortable.
The usual safety guidelines apply when using a product like this. You can’t purchase it if you are under the age of 16 and you need to be careful not to get it near eyes and your mouth so always wash your hands thoroughly after applying it (you will want to do this anyway to get the smell of your hands).Price wise, this is in line with other similar products. The general price for a tube of this gel is £4.49 and for your money you get a 100g tube.
Overall, we have mixed feelings on this product. This is my own review of the product and I wasn’t impressed with it at all and would take the deep heat products anyday over this. It is worth remembering though that my partner loved it and now chooses this over the deep heat products so I suppose it comes down to personal preference. The coldness just made me feel more uncomfortable, whereas the heat products loosen my back up. This did ease the pain to a degree after a while but I have found far more effective products than this and for that reason, I personally wouldn’t really recommend it.
