Dell's PowerEdge packs a punch
Review of Dell PowerEdge 2450 by rene.millman

Advantages: Pro: Slinky, power-packed server for cramped datacentres.
Disadvantages: Con: No 64-bit PCI slots, not enough PCI expansion slots.

...Dell's PowerEdge 2450 provides a space-saving design and first-rate performance that races ahead of rival workgroup-class servers. IT managers looking for a svelte, high-performance rack-mountable server for datacentre and web server applications will find that the PowerEdge 2450 provides hearty performance at a very reasonable price. The PowerEdge 2450 includes dual Pentium III 733MHz processors and an embedded Intel 82559 Pro/100+ Ethernet adapter with load balancing and fail-over support, 512MB of RAM, four 9GB Ultra3 drives running at 10,000 rpm. Also in the package is a PERC3/Si Raid controller with an optional RAID authorisation key. It costs the same as more or less rival servers, including Compaq's £10,000-plus ProLiant DL380. Although Hewlett-Packard's NetServer LPr is available for about £5610 + VAT, it has only two hard... Read review

Look at my Little ones
Review of HP Dual Port Hard drive 146 GB by andycharger

Advantages: Smaller, less power hungry
Disadvantages: None

...Following on from my review yesterday on server Ultra SCSI hard disks, here im going to tell you about their younger, smaller and better brother. The Serial SCSI hot swap 146.8Gb Hard disks by HP. As with all technology, everything seems to be in the constant evolution to downsize. Hard drive downsizing always struck me as a difficult one to tackle as people require more and more storage, hence bigger disk space. Somehow the Serial SCSI has mastered this by shrinking the form factor down from a width of 3.5 inches to 2.5. The Height of the device is also somewhat reduced. A reduction in size means a reduction in moving parts size. This in turn leads to a great power saving which makes these drives more economical and environmentally friendly than their older but bigger brothers. As mentioned we have a mixture of G4 and G5... Scuzzy wuzzy, lets get buzzy
Review of Adaptec AVA 2904 by shearerm

Advantages: A bargain. Easy to install and used. Good entry level SCSI controller.
Disadvantages: No support for higher data rates.

...of my first ever submission to Ciao) all of which require a SCSI controller in order to connect them to your PC! So as well as discussing Adaptec’s excellent card I will also try and give a simple introduction to SCSI what it is, its pros and cons and why you might want to use it. A SCSI card is possibly one of the least sexy devices you can plug into your PC. However, it is one of your more useful options as installing it opens up a huge range of possibilities. SCSI stands for "Small Computer System Interface" and is pronounced "scuzzy" and is a system for connecting things to your pc, things like hard drives, scanners and cd writers, devices that need to be able to shift hefty amounts of data about quickly. A while back SCSI walked all over IDE in terms of performance but cost a packet. Not only were SCSI devices vastly more... Read review
