Advantages: Size, cheap Disadvantages: Paper intake, expensive cartridges, slow
I bought this Dell printer several months ago when my old printer broke down. I have never really needed to print much (only the occasional essay or B-day card), so I decided to go for this cheap Dell 720 photo printer. I looked for the cheapest printer I could find and I believe this one cost between £30-35 on the Dell website. I have just checked on the website and I don’t think they even sell this version anymore. A newer version the ‘Dell 725’ ... ...that Dell sells in the UK (at £35).
I ordered the printer on the website and everything from payment to delivery went very smooth (as you might expect from such a big company).
IN THE BOX:
The Dell photo printer 720
2 Inkcartridges: 1 Black Standard Capacity Cartridge and 1 Tri- color Standard Capacity Cartridge (Cyan/Magenta/Yellow).

A newer version the ‘Dell 725’ has replaced the 720 and is now the cheapest model that Dell sells in the UK (at £35).

The manual
Disk with drivers and Dell Picture Studio Software - Paint ShopTM Photo AlbumTM and a trial version of Paint ShopTM Pro 8.
Cable to connect your printer to the electric network
Unfortunately a USB-cable is not included and should be purchased separately. You better not buy this from the Dell website as they charge ridiculous prices for a simple cable that shouldn’t cost more than a few quid. Any computer store or big supermarket should have these USB cables in stock.
I found all of the programs that were included completely useless and removed them from my computer after several days. I normally use Google’s free Picasa software to view and edit photo’s and was not really interested in the trial version of Paint shop pro 8. Some of you might find this software useful, but I just found it a waste of hdd space.
PRINTING QUALITY
I mainly use this printer to print of essays, or newsarticles I want to save. The quality of these prints is good, but I guess that black on white printing isn’t much of a challenging task for any printer nowadays. So I’ve tried printing off some photo’s to see how well the printer performed in the more demanding tasks. I didn’t have very high expectations (despite the fact that the printer is called a ‘photoprinter’) because it was so cheap and doesn’t look very ‘photo-printer-like’. The quality of the prints was as expected. Not very good and you could clearly see the pixels on each photo. Personally I find printing off photo’s on your own computer too expensive and very time-intensive. I usually get my photos printed off by some specialised photo-print company, which is a lot cheaper and the picture quality is also a lot better. But that’s a different story.
In theory this printer can print up to 13ppm in black and 7ppm in colour, but my printing speed has never even come close to that. In essay printing (full pages in a black letter type) I am happy when it prints 7-8 pages per minute. When there are tables and graphs included it is even slower than that. Colour prints require even more time and an A4 print usually takes between 20-30 seconds to print (equivalent to 2-3ppm). So don’t simply look at the theoretical print speed as this isn’t the actual speed!
PAPER INTAKE
I have had serious trouble with the paper intake of this printer. I use standard A4 printer paper, but the printer often fails to accept just 1 sheet of paper. Especially when the paper tray is fairly full (20-30 sheets), the printer often takes in 2 sheets at a time or starts printing on a new sheet of paper when the previous page hasn’t finished yet. Nowadays I just feed the printer 1 page at a time which often results in annoying ‘out of paper’ errors if I don’t ‘feed’ it fast enough. If the paper is slightly bend or folded the situation is even worse.
SIZE
The advantage of this printer is its size. It is very small and easily fits on a desk or in a ‘tiny’ student room. But then there is no need for it to be big because it doesn’t have any other functions a part from printing...
CARTRIDGES
The cartridges are very expensive (almost as much as the printer cost!) and I I usually order them from the Dell website. I don’t know if they can be purchased cheaper anywhere else, but I doubt there will be much difference between shops. Luckily there is a Ink Management SystemTM included that notifies you when the cartridges are running low (so you can start saving :-).
OVERALL
It is a good printer if you don’t need to print daily. It is very good value for money and if you don’t use the printer to intensively a cartridge does last you a fairly long time. Don’t be mislead by the name ‘Dell photoprinter 720’ because the photo print quality is very low! If you’re looking for a bargain and don’t expect the printer to do anything a part from printing this printer is just the thing for you. If you need to print daily or want to print off photo’s you’ll be happier with a more expensive machine and probably not a Dell :-). Other companies are more specialised in photo printing.

Advantages: A good cheap printer £9.99 Disadvantages: Not the best photo quality, £39 for cartridges
...was this price was that Dell were celebrating their Birthday.
Ordering
The process of ordering was simple through Dells website using my credit card. To get the printer for £9.99 the USB cable had to be removed from the order, I think they were charging something in the order of a tenner for that, I managed to pick one up from Maplins for £2. I promptly recieved an 'e' mail confirming the order.
Delivery
After a couple of days I recieved an 'e' ... ...1/5 of the price that Dell wanted to charge it was time to set up the printer. Following the instructions it was a simple case of loading the CD and installing the software, it is important to do this before plugging in the printer. There is a calibration process that you are taken through to make sure prints are optimum.
Quality
Printing quality is reasonable but photographs are a little blurred. I haven't yet used it on photographic paper but ...

...printer because I own a Dell Inspiron Laptop and I reckoned that a printer from the same brand would ensure easy compatability. I urchased this little printer a bit under a year ago second hand on Ebay, from a guy who'd used it to print out his thesis.
There was no instruction manual at all. I'd have liked one, although installation was straightforward with a CD Rom. You really need a CD Rom drive to install it. It's cheaper to buy unbranded cartridges from one of the online mailorder companies specialising in catridges. That's expensive enough - around £18 for a black toner cartridge, and even more for a colour one. The photo quality is fine, at least for my needs. I'm oldfashioned and prefer 'real' photos for my album, but I sometimes print out something from the internet ...

Review of Dell Colour Printer 720**- Affordable Inkjet Solution
I bought my dell printer when my other printer died and thought wow what a bargain. I found it on the dell website for just £9.99 excellent i thought. But then when you add the delivery and vat and the fact that i had to buy the connection cable seperatly i was beginning to have my doubts. but it was still a cheap printer.
Then i realised why this printer was so cheap. You get two trial cartridges with it one black one colour. Fair enough i thought ... ...to get them from is dell themselves and they cost £22.33 plus vat and shipping. And they do not make an alternative to these in any cheap form.
This must be were dell make there money . They practically give away the printers to make the money on the cartridges. Well this is my opinion anyway and if im wrong could someone please tell me were i can get cartridges from that are cheaper.. Thank you
Overall the printer is a nice little printer the ...
