Dell have produced a great PDA in the X30. The one to go for is the 624Mhz version and it has 64Mb ram. This can be expanded with SDRam cards or MMC.There is a cut down model without Wireless with a 312Mhz cpu but go for the 624Mhz model with Wireless 802.11b and Bluetooth. It comes from Dell with a USB sync cradle that also recharges your Axim.
There is an adapter that can be used with the power adapter to charge when you are travelling. Also included is a leather wallet stylus and driver cd which has some extra software and demo versions of some commercial application software.
The operating system is MS Pocket PC 2003 SE. Bundled applications include Pocket Word, Excel, Notes, Media Player, Internet Explorer and MSN Messenger. Games include Solitaire and Jawbreaker an adictive game in the line of Tetris.
Uses for your PDA?
Visit websites from anywhere in the house or garden when connected to a wireless router. The BBC pda website has news, weather, sport and access to the h2g2 portal.
In addition to the PDA features like address book, appointments and messages, watch movies either on Media Player or a DivX player like tcpmp when you can download movies from the net. The screen can rotate so your widescreen movies look great MP3 files can be downloaded from your PC and use your PDA as an MP3 player.
Your SD card can be inserted from your digital camera to view the pictures you have taken on the 240x320 QVGA resolution screen. The Radio Times site has an application that can be downloaded that allows you to sync with the latest tv schedules and you can remote control your television or digibox.
The killer applications; Download Skype for Pocket PC and in conjunction with a bluetooth headset, you can be talking VOIP to other Skype users for free from your living room.
Get a bluetooth GPS adapter and Navigation software to turn your Dell Axim X30 into the perfect in car navigation system.
Get a blogging tool and write updates when you are out and about and can connect to a wireless access point.
This was purchased direct from Dell via the internet. I think Dell products can now only be purchased directly from them. Cutting out the middle man means that the savings are passed onto us and this is why they can knock out super cheap deals.
I opted for the 624Mhz bad boy, with Blutooth, WLAN, Sat Nav with Bluetooth Receiver, 265Mb extra memory. Came to about £460 in total. A similar spec HP model with all this equipment, but a much slower CPU ... ...more. Evertyhing works perfectly on this little gizmo, The sat nav has voice recognition and is basically Dells own "ripoff" of the highly acclaimed TOMTOM 3 navigator software. Email and Internet connectivity is made easy by either using the bluetooth to dial through a bluetooth enabled phone, or by using the wireless card which is built in, to piggy back onto wireless networks ( all done legally of course )
12 months return to base warranty comes ...

Advantages: Looks great, works flawlessly, has wireless AND bluetooth Disadvantages: Dell customer service isn't great when buying...
I bought my Dell Axim X30 just over 3 months ago, and I absolutely love it. I did a lot of research in order to choose this particular model, and in the end I opted for it because I could get a 624MHz processor with bluetooth, wireless and a cradle for a similar sum as a lower-spec X50. It's considerably cheaper than many similar products produced by other companies.
The only downside is the Dell customer service. It really isn't as good as it should ... ...can rarely resolve it. Dell uses foreign call centres, and there is a definite feeling that the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.
However despite that my PDA was delivered extremely quickly, perfectly packaged and with everything I ordered.
Another positive feature of the X30 itself is the battery life. I purchased a longlife battery to go with the standard one that came with my X30, but I don't have to use it very often. The ...

Advantages: 32MB storage space, sd card slot, user friendly Disadvantages: no wi-fi or bluetooth
I've had this for little over a week now since buying it off eBay, but even second hand, this is a dream. It says Pocket PC on the front and that is essentially what it is, a miniature pc. It comes with basic Microsoft software such as calender and note applications, as well as office software such as Pocket Word and Pocket Excel preinstalled along with solitaire, but with 32MB of built-in storage which might not sound a lot, but the most common ... ...is generous for those and there is plenty of room for documents and additional programs. The SD card slot in the top is great for expanding the memory even further and providing a quick way to back up your PDA. The basic model doesn't come with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, but the more advanced models do. All models come with a scroll wheel built into the left hand side of the device which acts like a scroll bar on a computer. There is a stereo headphone ...

Advantages: Cost effective and fast Disadvantages: Based on Microsofts Pocket PC operating system!
...considered buying a PDA, the Dell Axim X30 caught my attention. OK, it wasn't the sleek, sexy looking PDA that some people have but it certainly seemed well capable of most tasks. It has a fast 624MHz processor, 64Mb of internal memory which is expandable using an SD card. Above all, it has built in wi-fi (wireless connection) and blue-tooth - what more could you want?!
It arrived with a docking station with a USB connector for connectng to the ... ...my PC using wi-fi but Dell Tech Support were very helpful and in the end it turned out to be my firewall (on my PC) that was causing the problem.
The applications include: E-mail, Contacts, Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, Calendar, MSN Messenger, Games and a few other applications. Of course you can also use the PDA as an MP3 player as well as watch movies on it.
After using it for a few weeks, however, I realised that my initial instincts ...

Advantages: Light, good battery life Disadvantages: Not easy to use Pocket Word/Excel.
I was bought one of these by work and for the first couple of weeks i thought it was brilliant. however the novelty factor can soon wear off. It is virtually impossible to use pocket word or excel for anything meaningful as it will drive you insane attempting to use the onscreen keyboard. It is also worth bearing in mind that when entering passwords, if someone else is watching the screen, they will get it straight away due to the speed that you ... ...is surprisingly good and though a few people have commented that the text is too small, I dont share this view.
Where these things come into their own is for the diary and online functions. With full wifi and bluetooth support most websites will load up as they do on a standard pc. (some however do have problems). Add to this, the pocket version of MSN and the X30 caters for the businessman and teenager alike. The Axim can be hooked up to your PC ...
