My Palm Tungsten E was beginning to show its age after a couple of years and I started looking at a replacement. I am not confident about the future for Palm units so thought I'd look at Pocket PC models. After initially looking at HP iPaq models I felt that the Dell range offered better value for money. My criteria included straightforward compatibility with MS Outlook and other MS Office applications, a large bright screen and the option to include a sat nav package. After reading some very positive reviews in the computer press I decided on the Axim.
The Dell website were offering the 520 for the same price as the 416 so I went for this option. I also purchased the Dell Navigator sat nav, carry case and screen protectors. Unit £225 Sat Nav £183
Overview I am mostly very pleased with this unit, it is noticeably more powerful and better quality than my old Palm. The display will be familiar to most PC users as it mirrors the Win XP desktop very well. All applications and functions are easily accessible from the Start menu which can be customised to provide shortcuts if required. The screen is very clear and bright and doesn't have any dead space. It can become hard to view in brighter light but this is common for most PDAs. The bundled software all work well, the Outlook functions are easy to use and sync well with your main PC. The Office applications are fairly comprehensive in terms of functionality. MS Word is very good and virtually fully formatted documents can be produced. MS Excel and Powerpoint are equally good but the screen size makes them hard to use effectively, they are usable at a pinch but no replacement for a full size machine. The on-screen keyboard is good for entering text and is accessible from most applications, but it's not a patch on the Palm Graffiti tool.
Pocket PC units tend to be bigger than their Palm equivalents and this is no exception. With the carry case the Axim becomes quite bulky and you're not going to forget it's in your pocket. It's also noticeably heavier, but we're only talking grams here. The battery life is quite disappointing and depending on what applications are running can be down to a couple of hours. If you are a heavy user you might want to consider getting the bigger battery.
The selection of software and games for Pocket PCs is huge and you should find something to meet your needs without too many problems.
The Dell Navigator sat nav add on was one of the main reasons for choosing this machine. It really is very good once you get it set up. The instructions were for a different version of Windows and consequently I had to spend some time with the help files to get the connection working. The map files included cover much of the UK and Europe and can be selected by country. This is important as the map files are very large and even just using the UK map virtually filled my 512MB expansion card. The maps are pretty up to date and after a lot of use I've only found one new road not covered (A21 sth of Tonbridge). Setting up a route is quick and easy, the list of possible destinations is very comprehensive and I haven't defeated it yet. On the move the directions are very clear on screen and the vocal instructions are pleasant and well timed. If you go off course or think you know better the unit will recalculate within seconds and revise its directions.
USB cable and cradle connections are included and the Auto Sync function works well. My machine has a tendency to freeze on occasion and this requires a 'soft' reboot but this is frustrating more than a real problem.
Summary: This is a good quality, powerful unit that should meet most of your PDA needs. The bundled software will cover 90% of the things that you want to do and everything else is easily found. The sat nav package is very good and I would certainly recommend it as an alternative to a dedicated unit. In one sense you are buying an excellent sat nav and getting a top of the range PDA thrown in.
Advantages: Unlimited storage with removable SD memory cards. Small and powerful Disadvantages: Manual not very informative. Small (64MB) Onboard memory
...I finally settled on a Dell because of the brand name and other user reviews. Choosing the 520Mhz was quite easy because of the promotional price they were offering at the time, it was the same price as the 420Mhz model. Before I get to the actuall PDA a word of advice, don't order telephonically as it is very easy for the consultant on the other end to get the wrong information. Do it online so that they have everything in Black and White. My PDA ... ...receiving both PDA's I contacted Dell and was advised that I could keep both because of the the inconvenience. However after 2 days I was called about 3 times a day asking when they could come and collect the 2nd PDA they shipped by mistake. By this time I had already purchassed accesories for it and was not going to give it back. After forwarding e-mails back and forth about 5 times they seem to have eventually sorted everything out and my wife ...

Advantages: Size, weight, processing power Disadvantages: Lack of memory
...im glad i chose the Dell one. There was some confusion at the start (but that was due to the wrong model being sent out, so the actual PDA was not to blame). The processing speed is just right, software supplied is top stuff, and despite some comments i found the internet very easy to set-up. I simple turned on the wireless and selected my connection. I also use mine as a satnav unit, and again its more than up to the job. I have TOMTOM Navigator ... ...the job. The processor is more than capable of keeping up with the pace of the car.
However, the only downside with this unit is the lack of memory. It has 64 MB onboard memory. Obviously this can be easily upgraded using an SD card, as they are reletively cheap these days. Although if you use it as a satnav unit aswell, like myself, then you need to have the TOMTOM card inserted, which replaces the SD card, and so you have to continue to swap and ...

Advantages: Does everything you want in a PDA Disadvantages: Problems turning on sometimes
I have been the proud owner of my Axim x51 for just over a year now. I use it to keep my work diary, surf the net and i use it for sat nav using tomtom software. It is very easy to use and has 2 card slots one for SD cards and one for compact flash. I use both at the same time. The speed of the system is good and as long as you use memory cards you can store whatever you want. It comes with a charging cradel which you can link with your pc and use ...

Advantages: Good range of software available Disadvantages: Internet can be tricky to set-up
Dell has unfortunately recently stopped producing the Axim X51v, however for those sites stil stocking the product, it is definately worth getting your hands on!
I have had no problems with my handheld, and it deals with all of my needs. I have been able to easily purchess additional memory and freeware software off the net, and this has enhanced the Axim.
The programs that already come installed on the axim aren't the best however. All of the ... ...those on the computer, and the internet access capabilities are good, but quite hard to set-up.
My only real qualm with the Axim X51v is the bundled software that comes on the installation CD, many of which don't inform you of their status as a trial product, and this can be annoying in the long run.
All in all, the product is well worth the money you will spend on it! ...

Advantages: Fast, big and bright screen, battery life good enough for daily use, build quality Disadvantages: Spartan extras, expensive to add addisional hardware
I bought my DellX51v last month after using a HP Jornada 710 for 6 years. The Dell is an extremely competent machine. It has one of the largest displays in the business and it is bright and clear. I am happy with the battery life... lasting a week with intermittent use, but I suspect that power users will probably opt for a second battery, since I suspect you could get between 6-8 hours continuous use. The docking station does have an extra charging bay for the extra battery to be charged.
The Dell is fast, but I do experience some sluggishness sometimes. I suspect it has more to do with Windows Mobile 5 and the automatic CPU throttle than processing power. I opt to keep my Dell's processor to run at full speed (624Mhz). It has unbelievable video playback and manages to playback wmv files with no problem. To playback AVI, DivX ...

DellAximX51v 624mhz
The DellX51v comes in different forms, this review is based on the X51v model with the 624mhz processor, I have had my PDA now for little over a month, its primary use is as a GPS Satellite Navigation device when it is coupled with my GPS device by Bluetooth. My original idea was to buy a Sat Nav system, however after looking at the ever falling prices and raising specifications of PDA's I decided to go down this route. Whilst more expensive, the PDA provides lots more abilities than just buying a Sat Nav device. For those who are unsure of what a PDA is, PDA stands for Personal Digital Assistant and is basically a palmheld watered down PC. Ive added the full specifications to the bottom of my review to compliment the details given by Ciao and to give a greater understanding of what is available
PDA's have so ...
