After reviewing about 20 different models I finally settled on a Dell because of the brand name and other user reviews. Choosing the 520Mhz was quite easy because of the promotional price they were offering at the time, it was the same price as the 420Mhz model.
Before I get to the actuall PDA a word of advice, don't order telephonically as it is very easy for the consultant on the other end to get the wrong information. Do it online so that they have everything in Black and White. My PDA was sent to the wrong address 3 times before I eventually went to collect it from UPS myself. This also resulted in me having a replacement PDA sent to me as the first one went missing. However both the original PDA and the replacement were sent to the wrong address. After receiving both PDA's I contacted Dell and was advised that I could keep both because of the the inconvenience. However after 2 days I was called about 3 times a day asking when they could come and collect the 2nd PDA they shipped by mistake. By this time I had already purchassed accesories for it and was not going to give it back. After forwarding e-mails back and forth about 5 times they seem to have eventually sorted everything out and my wife and I both have our own PDA's.
After telling you about the buying process, which leaves a bit to be desired, let me tell you about the actuall PDA. It is very easy to use for the basic functions, but because the manual is not very informative it took me a couple of minutes to figure out the more intricate features, like the wireless connection and the synchronising of media files. However in all honesty a very detailed online manual is available, I just prefer to figure things out for myself.
The best feature is the wireless connection and once Skype, or any other VOI (voice over internet) software is installed, it becomes a fantastic communication tool. Quality is outstanding (Depending on internet connection speed) and is pretty easy to set up. One tip is to download the application or programme to your PC and then transfer the file onto your PDA using the USB connection.
Transfering your own pictures and MP3's are also easy once you have your USB connection. The Bluetooth function also works very well.
There are a few things that I have found to be annoying, but not every-ones circumstances are the same so they might not bug you. The alarm or alert for meetings and appointments is very soft and if it is in your bag I doubt you will hear it. You can also not change the way your contacts are sorted. If I save an Allan Smith in my PDA it will save it as Smith, Allan.
The battery life is acceptable but for heavy users I would reccomend the long life battery. The only other setback is that after you close an application it stays open in the memory and you have to manually close all of your applications when your system starts slowing down.
The call centers are all located in India as far as I know so communication can be a bit of a struggle at times. However the call centre agents are all extremely helpfull and knowledgable if you can get past the language barrier.
But like I mentioned other users may not even take notice of these shortcomings. All in all it is a wonderful machine and I would highly reccomend it to any-one.
