I purchased the Dell Axim primarily to use on the factory floor for access to EMails, Statistical Data from Excel, and the usual Calendar and Contact applications. It does all I expected of it without fuss. It is very quick loading programs and files, the Windows interface is relatively easy to use, although getting my head around the various internet and wireless settings took some time - however that is a feature of the operating system, not the PDA.
I like the fact that it is quick and easy to switch from portrait to landscape modes ( good for Excel docs )
There are 4 button controls on the front, and two on the side which can be configured to suit, but the standard setup works fine for me ( calendar, contacts, Email, Internet)
I have big stumpy fingers and very soft nails so I don't tend to use the navigation tool much, preferring to use the stylus, as I keep missing !.
The side buttons are OK, but I keep my PDA in a zip-around case, and when I remove it from the case to put it in the charger cradle, I invariably switch on the wireless network or start the recorder.
Data Input is perfectly good using the stylus with the keypad, and this is my preferred method for spreadsheets and the diary/contacts. I couldn't get on with the letter and word recognition systems and quickly changed to 3rd Party Apps from Phatware for handwriting recognition. Now I make most meeting notes on the PDA using hand writing and have fewer problems post meeting wondering what I meant than I did with paper and pencil !!
I opted for the high capacity battery which with moderate wireless use will run for a couple of days without re-charging. As the PDA is often in the cradle for diary synchronisation it's never been a problem for me.
One surprise and disappointment was that the PDA will not re-charge from the USB cable alone, which means that I can only have the charger cradle on one PC ( I usually synchronise between my home PC, my Work PC and my PDA) This may also have an impact as I intend to buy a Navigation add-on in due course, and hoped to keep it charged up in the car.
Sound quality is surprisingly good, although I have ditched the Microsoft Media Player for a third party one, and whilst headphones are preferable, the inbuilt speaker is adequate for background foot tapping.
I have purchased a 1gb SD data card, and all my applications and MP3s are on this, and I would recommend anyone configuring ther PDA to keep as much data as poss on removeable devices as it tends to get buried in the file structure if you are not careful.
All in all, a very useful little tool
