Inspirational Inspiron 1520 by Dell
Ok lets run through the whole process.
ORDERING
Ordering a dell couldnt be more simple. The online process is great and easy to use. In fact far easier to use than the telephone service where the how can i put it, difference in accent, can often lead to mistakes. Once you have chosen the model you require then you will be guided through a series screens where you can purchase additional options for your computer, things such as extra hard disk capacity, better screen etc. The beauty about this feature is that if you try to make an upgrade choice which is incompatable with the operating system you have chosen it will flag up and not let you proceed with the order until a suitable alternative has been chosen. To be honest the chances of this happening are very slim and it is usually confined to the type of DVD rewriter you choose in conjuction with using either Vista or Xp.
I have just taken delivery of my Dell inspiron 1520, and to be honest didnt really need to upgrade the machine much at all. The standard spec for this laptop is really rather good. In fact i beleive it has been increased over the past few months. The standard spec for this laptop as of 11/Nov 2007 is as follows:
Standard spec: (£529.00) Black finish Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 Processor (1.5ghz) 15.4" wide screen monitor nVidia Geforce graphics with 128mb DDR2 Dedicated card 2048 mb Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM 160GB HDD Fixed internal 8x DVD +/- RW Drive including software Wireless & Bluetooth connectivity 1 year collect and return service Free shipping
You can request that the laptop comes with Windows XP if you prefer at no extra cost. This is really down to personal preferecne.
EXTRAS
There are so many extras to choose from i will only outline some of the relevant ones:
Laptop comes in choice of colours: Pink, green, red, blue, brown and white (£29-58) True-life screen - for better, crisper sharper colours (£10.00) nVidia 256mb Graphics (£40) Nylon Case (£20)
You can obviously buy extra hdd space but to be honest 160gb is ample and your money would be better spent purchasing an external HDD drive to be used as a backup for you photos, videos etc.
THE MACHINE ITSELF
The machine itself is very sleek and lightweight, the keys have a soft feel and the screen colours superb. It worked straight out of the box by following the usual easy step by step set up guide by Windows to create your first user account. The wireless connectivity found my 'Orange livebox' for my internet connectio easily and connection was a simple as typing in my secure wep key. Internet ready in minutes, you cant ask better than that. The laptop comes with all the usual microsoft features including microsoft works 8.0 which is adequate for most users. It includes a word processor and spreadsheet programme. In fact unless you are using it for a business i would not bother spending the extra £100+ on full microsoft office.
The dvd writer is simplicity itself, a simple drag and drop utility lets you burn images, video and data at the click of a button.
The only downside with theis particular laptop is the price, currebly selling at £529 it is not the cheapest but you do get a very good standard spec for you money. Other cheaper options are available and if you only want to use a laptop for general interne usage and e-mails then you do not need such a high spec machine. Lower spec are available for around £450
Overall a very good machine, built well and lightweight. Delivered on time and when specified, had no problems with the machine at all, mind you ive only had it a few weeks, but hey a good start.
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
(+) positive aspects include the speed, apperance/design of the laptop, and the enhanced performance. (-) i have a matt black laptop and it shows dirty finger prints.
Exceptional review. I personally would have formatted the machine and replaced it with Linux, but Dell have now started offering Linux as standard on its range of machines. I look forward to someone reviewing this machine with Linux on it.
btw, as spin2021 says, OpenOffice is amazing.
Advantages: thin, light weighed, good battery life, nice keyboard touchpad, solid performance and featurs, fast speed Disadvantages: No dedicated Graphics option, a bit noisy
