I have been using this web book for about a month now so thought I would offer a review, from my perspective as an amateur user.
My husband (technohead) ordered my Inspiron mini 10 for me (non technohead) direct from Dell.com. It took about two weeks to arrive and cost £349 after we'd added some bits and pieces to it, although they start at £299. The standard colours it comes in are white and black, although there is an array of other colours that can be ordered, but you have to pay extra. I wanted an orange one but saw that it added £35 to the build cost, so decided to stick with white instead. I think it looks pretty good in white anyway! Nice and glossy and shiny - I wonder how long I'll be able to keep it that way without scratching it up!
According to Dell.com, the mini 10 weighs 2.6lbs and is 1.1 inches thick. It has a screen of 10.1 inches wide. That is the whole screen mind you, including a black band round the outside which isn't useable. According to my trusty ruler, the useable screen is 22.3cm (or 8.8 inches).
Up the right hand side of the mini 10, the right hand ports are 2 audio ports (1line in, 1 mic in) HDMI out, 2USB ports and an Ethernet port (whatever the heck that is. Did I mention I'm not a technohead?!lol) Up the left hand side of the mini 10 are a Kensington lock port (what the....???) a power adaptor port, a USB port and a 3 in 1 card reader.
It has 2GB RAM and a keyboard that is 92% of the size of a regular laptop keyboard. As a touch typist, I find this keyboard a very easy size to use unlike some other laptops I've used with tiny keyboards.
The screen is bright and clear, although I find the text a bit small and I sometimes find it a bit slow to respond. Another downside is that there seems to be a shortcut command in the keypad somewhere that tells it to suddenly highlight all the text I've been typing and at the next keystroke, delete it all. I don't quite know how I am managing to do this and haven't pinned down what keys it is I'm hitting that give the instruction to do this, but it is extremely annoying! My previous Dell laptop that I replaced with this one, didn't have a habit of doing this but I guess this may be a shortcut in Word, rather than the computer itself.
A plus point is that it does seem quite robust, as my dog pulled mine off the dining cable onto a tiled floor and it seems totally undamaged and is stilll working perfectly!
In addition, although some people seem to find the integral mouse to be hard to get used to, I've had no problems at all and find it very easy to use. It must be designed for amateurs like me, lol!
Overall, I do like the Inspiron mini 10 for it's portability and the keyboard size is a big plus. However, I don't think I could use the Inspiron mini 10 to work on all day, due to the small screen size and it's occasional slowness (and the annoying short cut that deletes paragraphs of text!) but it's fine for me to use for e-mail, browsing the web etc. Maybe I just need glasses as I am approaching middle age!
Anyhoo, I hope my review of an amateur's perspective of the Inspiron mini might be of some help to someone and thank you for reading.
