The Dell 1100 offers the convenience of a laser printer in a size suitable for personal use. However, the dimensions given do not include the paper tray, which adds about four inches to the footprint when the printer is loaded with A4.
The printer itself is of a very simple design, with a single button to control printing operations. This is mostly adequate; however, it does cause difficulty in the event of a paper jam. I often found I had to carefully pull sheets from the printer by hand as the printer refused to feed the remaining paper out. Some of the moveable parts of the printer, such as the paper tray and the folding "scoop" which collects printed pages, feel somewhat flimsy; however, in six months of regular use they have developed no visible sign of wear.
Changing the toner cartridge is quick and simple, and the manufacturer's estimation of 1000 pages per cartridge seems accurate from my experience.
In the first few weeks of using this printer, I had a great many frustrating paper jams when printing multiple pages. This, seemingly, was the result of incautious loading of paper, which also led to the printer frequently taking two sheets from the stack instead of one and so printing the page across them. This problem was easily solved by making sure that the paper was inserted carefully and straightly and that the printer was not overloaded; however, it should be noted that the 1100 does seem to be very sensitive in this regard.
I cannot comment on the ease of installing the Dell 1100, as it came preinstalled with my Dell laptop; however, I have had no software or driver issues with it; the supplied drivers seem thoroughly reliable.
This is an excellent printer for personal use printing type or other black-and-white documents. It is suitable for reasonably high-volume print tasks and will complete them quickly; however, the light build of the paper trays, lack of direct control of the hardware and tendency to jam if overloaded makes it unsuitable for very heavy use.
