Now, lets face it, you are probabley only going to buy this laptop for business purposes, Dell don't even offer this to the home user market. So, its agreed, you are likely to be looking at this for work purposes, so the next question is, what do you need to do on it?
When purchasing any asset for the professional environment it is all about cost effectiveness. This is often misconstrude as buy cheap... on the contrary, its about buying the most appropriate device for the job(s) required. For example; there is no point in buying a top spec XPS system if you are using the device primarily for email and internet browsing.
So what sets this system apart from the others? The first thing to consider is that you are buying from a world leading supplier. A supplier with an impecable support structure. You are therefore buying in to a brand with heritage.
Got that out of the way, so what laptop to buy? You have to be realistic and decide what it is you are going to be doing with it but you are already looking at this (D630) so how will it benefit you?
The D630, as with any Dell product, is totally customisable so you can build a high end number crunching unit or have a mobile workstation to provide access to the communication tools that are important to you.
The important thng to consider is that this laptop is built for usability, reliability and stability. It features Hyperconnect technologies (Dell proprietary network enablers) and strikezone hard disk protection (just in case you drop your laptop, your data will be safe and retrievable).
This laptop comes with a 14.1" WXGA or WXGA+ screen, support for up to 4Gb RAM and a variety of Intel and AMD chipsets. Using Hyperconnect, supports a number of networking technologies. Its portable with a decent battery life but more importantly, you are getting a business ready computer at a competitive price.
If you want to play games, browse the net and email then buy a Dell Inspiron. If you want high end performance with exceptional design and content engineering capability, then buy the Dell Precision. If you want a laptop that is built for mobility and performance then buy the Latitude.
Its important for me not to say that you can have 'x' and 'y' specification as it comes in a number forms, and probabley wouldnt mean anything. The important thing is to understand the underlying design principles behind the Dell series laptops.
Advantages: good price, large 14.1 inch screen Disadvantages: touch pad buttons dodgy, bulky for carrying
...order this online directly from dell and have it configured with a max of 4GB RAM, 160GB Hard disk drive.
I have windows 2000 installed on the laptop and I would not recommend it - it can sometimes freeze and the touchpad does not do well when you are using a USB mouse, so frequent reboots are needed. I would give this particular aspect a negative. I've seen on other d630 that XP is much more reliable, so go for that. I would recommend disabling ... ...not get as hot as some other laptops which is a bonus.
The laptop also has select buttons above and below the touchpad. I only use these when I do not have an external mouse present. They are not the easiest to use as you have to really press them to take effect and could be more sensitive.
It has a 14.1 inch widescreen and with dvd playing software it is good for watching movies and the speakers do well on this without sounding echoey
Generally ...

i have three DELL latops now this one is used for work, its qiute good for what it's for, It has bluetooth, WIFI, and built in broadband modem
On Wifi the connection is very fast but on broadband modem is painfuly slow, this could be because it is on T- Mobile, the sceen is small but it does the job. the intel Dou core 2 is very fast.
Spares are expensive but that is how DELL makes most of it profits, Value for money i would say is quite good, ...

...the car.
Like all Dell products there are some customisebale options, eg RAM and CPU but no matter which on you go for i dont think you will be dispointed. Like most manufactures they will chuck on a load of software that you do not need and only sits there clogging memory and cpu usage, but whip this off and you are set.
This model has plenty of USB slots, built in slot for SIM card and a could wireless card.....what more do you need! Like most ... ...the odd bit of CS:S, WOW or MOHAA if you keep the settings down. To me this is a bonus as this is generally not what you want a business laptop for.
Build quality is good, and is slightly better than older 505s, 610s etc. It is also slightly light for what i remember of the older models. if you are going to be away from a power source for a while then i recommend going for the biggest battery, and maybe even worth buying a modular one for that extra ...

Advantages: Professional, Fast and Reliable Disadvantages: Touchpad is impossible to use if its hot!!
...I was given a Dell D630 at the end of last year, and whilst there were more advanced products available, I went for this one as it was a straight replacement for my previous Dell which I was delighted with.
Technicals
It has an Intel Core™2 Duo processors, with Intel integrated graphics for optimal battery life, and even when not plugged in, will allow me around 2/3 hours of serious work.
It is built from a light magnesium alloy, and despite bashing ... ...Wireless-N, based on 802.11n technology and up to 5X the speed and 2X the range of traditional Wi-Fi when used with a Wireless-N router... I find with my wireless G card, I can access the internet on the train - although there are black holes when I cant connect.
The D630 combines a value for money and high performance machine, and with
- high resolution screen easily runs my 1280 x 800,
- Duo Centrio 4GB processor
- Very fast booting, so now ...

Advantages: Good for home use Disadvantages: not coping too well with many files opened at same time
I have been using Dell Latitude D630 Intel Centrino at work and i must say for home use it is great and just enough but for work when you open too many heavy excel spreadsheets it gets very slow. If you want to copy and paste big files to Word or Excel it is taking its time and after a few files in clipboard it takes sometimes too much time to process the data. With fast internet connection it is good for web brosing. But otherwise if you want to ... ...business use a little bit on heavy side so for me running around with it too often is a bit of a problem. I had a problem with battery and had to change it after about 1 year and a few people in office had the same problem but we all move around a lot using the laptops to its max so we push it to the limits that might be the reason. Overall easy to use and good not sure how it would cope with Vista as using Windows XP which suits this processor. ...
