Finally I decided to write a review about the most important part of my life at home ... err.. ofcourse, important after my girl friend :)
This GX270 was purchased 22 months ago for £500 . The dell website allowed me to choose different specifications. I chose to go with a 19 inch flat monitor because there was not much space in my study room to place a bigger table to carry the classical big monitors.
At the time of purchase, I could choose £300 worth of additional features for free, so I went for Creative surround speaker system and DVD burner with the computer. The colour of all the components including the monitors, speaker system, subwoofer, chassis and the monitor are all total black with light greyish buttons (please see the picture).
A little warning here for online purchase is that you really need to have the patience to browse through different options and know what you exactly need. Especially on the Dell website, this is really an exercise of time and patience. My suggestion is that once you decide upon the basic model, then you can add the extra features depending on your budget. Secondly, Dell comes out with great offers now and then with respect to freebies (like extra hard drive, DVD burners or speakers etc). Look out for these times when you have decided to buy a desktop.
Well, back to the review ... my computer has the following specifications OS: Win XP Service pack 2 Processor: Intel Pentium 4 CPU: 2.8 GHz RAM: 1GB Hard disk: 120 GB DVD ROM drive - Samsung DVD/CD RW - NEC ND1300 3.5in 1.44MB Floppy Drive As i said before, I got the Creative speaker system and DVD+RW free as a promotion with this. In addition to this, we chose Dell USB Keyboard (2 USB slots) & Dell Optiplex Mouse.
The DVD-ROM asks you to set the region the first time you insert a DVD. After that you are "legally" allowed to change the region code 4 more times. I never had to change the region so that does not bother me.
The PC came with 1 years gurantee but we chose to have 3 yrs extended warranty. Needless to say, all the specifications above can be altered according to your choice and this would reduce the cost of the machine also. Dell gives you this flexibility of chosing the components you want and discarding the ones that you dont want. We also purchased a Creative webcam and Norton Antivirus with the computer.
I have been using this computer at home rigorously for the last 2 years or so.. and I am very happy with basically every aspect of it. The computer rarely misbehaves and the sound from the speakers is as good as Dolby Surround. The DVDs have played very well in the limited use and the burner has also been perfect so far.
But...... (the word which is always lurking around)
There are a couple of things which I would like to see in my next Dell Desktop. First, I wish to know which idiot designed two USB slots at the front-bottom side of the chassis. It is virtually impossible to reach those USB slots without having an extension cable. Secondly, the weight of the chassis is quite heavy. I am sure there are lighter models around.
So.. thats about my second love at home. I am happy with it and I am sure you will not be disappointed either.
