The Dell Studio 17 is a 17" Dell laptop which can be considered a desktop replacement laptop. It's market price is around $1000.
Design and Build: In dell's overall range Dell studio 17 fits somewhere between XPS gaming notebooks and Inspirons with a more professional look. This Dell Studio 17 is very similar to Dell's studio 15 but has some extra features. Its body has a colorful metallic design touches which really looks amazing. I think many users of this notebook would appreciate the number pad, fingerprint reader and the keyboard backlight which looks beautiful in absence of light. Its height is 1.2" - 1.7" which can be considered thick and the weight is 3.6 Kg which is also quite heavy for this notebook. therefore It cannot be considered as a portable laptop.
Screen: The screen is 17" with resolution of 1920x1200 which is great for multimedia use. It gives a widescreen display for which this notebook is great to watch movies and on. Veiwing angles are all perfect but the lower viewing angle give some bad colors when the screen is tilted back. But thats good enough!!
Ports and Features: It was strange to know that the 15" studio notebook had a eSATA port but this Dell Studio 17 does not have it. Instead there are 5 USB ports i think thats more than enough for Laptop computer. Other ports included in the Studio 17 is a mini firewire port, VGA, HDMI, Ethernet, Express port, and a Card Reader. Apart from this Studio 17 also has ATI's Mobility Radeon Graphics card which can help video acceleration and games to be powered. It also has a built in 2.0 MP webcam.
Performance: Studio 17 is better for multimedia usage. DVD's and games look magnificently good on this laptop. But along with a good graphic card it has a Intel 2.5 GHz core 2 Duo processor with a 4 GB DDR2 RAM. There is also a 320 GB hard disk in Studio 17 which is capable of the storage of huge amount of data/files. Hence the overall speed is good.
Keyboard and Touchpad: Generally i feel typing is easy and comfortable on this laptop, but the touchpad is a bit too slippery so the cursor is not well in control of the user.
Battery Life: Battery life is fine, as it give little less than 2 hours when heavily used.
Overall, I liked the Dell Studio 17, it's well-made, has a wide range of useful features, and is great for casual use. And it's available for a reasonable price. However, in many ways the Studio 15 is more attractive, features an external eSATA port which lets you easily add an external hard drive, and is a whole kilogram lighter.
