Demonata: Lord Loss - Darren Shan

All in all I believe the Demonata series are a good book series about the occult for younger generations. However I was a little surprised to find these books were available in bookstores such as borders for the up to 12 year olds, right next to Harry Potter. I don’t think I was being exposed to such graphic explanations of severed body parts and various methods of mutilation when I was 12. Last time I looked, children’s books featured wooden sticks that fire magical energy, or an evil ice queen. Darren Shan seems to think differently, because not far into Lord Loss, you will read the paragraph: ‘blood everywhere. Nightmarish splashes and gory pools. Wild streaks across the wall and floors.’ As you can see from the paragraph it is more of a book for mid-teens than children. So, Lord Loss maybe fairly gory, but it is a very good book. I bought this book after I first saw Darren Shan at the Edinburgh book festival and since then I've been hooked. I now own all the Demonata and half of the Darren Shan Saga. But back to the book in question. The Demonata is Darren Shans second series and Lord Loss is the first book in the series. I quite like this book. It has a simple plot, easy reading style with quite a bit of graphic horror. It is probably for readers that like to read unchallenging books as it makes for easy reading. Darren Shan's Lord Loss is a very entertaining book! The story starts off pretty normally with the introduction of Grubbs Grady and his family as he is caught smoking at school. All seems normal in the Grady family, but a feel of mystery is added when Grubbs' family act very suspicious about his sister, who has a terrible secret. You'll have to read the book to find out what i mean as i don't want to give away too much! After reading all of the Darren shan vampire saga i was expecting another thrilling read. This i was granted, however Lord Loss is similar to the first of the vampire series. It starts a magnificent line of stories, (the demonata) which i would recommend to anyone. The series is full of magic and a great plot, the first person way of writing really makes it exciting, the sort of read that you'll want to finish in the first sitting, in the case of Lord Loss that is an easy task.
