Dennerle Algae Defence Phosphate-Ex

Green-coloured water is caused by tiny barely visible floating algae. Floating algae can also multiple exponentially if there are enough nutrients available and phosphates in... more...particular. Fight algae with algaecides or the help of UV purifiers.

First Defence - it really works!?

Advantages: does what it says on the tin
Disadvantages: Hurts if you administer it wrong!

"First defence" is an interesting concept. A nasal spray that is meant to keep colds at bay. How could that work? There is no cure for the common cold, so logically you can't prevent it either. Other than by eating healthy and staying inside and never having contact with other human beings. But alas, I'm not a hermit, neither are you either in all probability. I'll admit, this another one of those products my wife had bought and stuffed in the cupboard and I didn't even know we had. She likes doing things like that. In our house, the cycle of illness is quite a common thing. Both my wife and I work in stuffy air conditioned offices where colds, bugs and flu's are regularly passed from person to person. Inevitably my wife seems to catch them first then is kind enough to give them to me. On the last occassion that occurred and I ...

Attack Is The Best Form Of Defence

Advantages: It actually seems to work !!
Disadvantages: Fairly expensive, but will last a whilst !

from work I plan on stopping off at the pharmacy to stock up on supplies, when a television advertisement pops into my head - I'm sure you've seen it ! It's the one where a mother and her young son are at the supermarket, and he starts to throw a tantrum, chucking a bag of cereal on the floor. She responds by making an even bigger scene by screaming and rolling about on the floor - causing the son to look shocked and behave himself. The product being advertised was "Vicks First Defence", with the slogan, "Fight Cold Germs Before They Can Take Hold". Upon entering the pharmacy, there was a big display for this new product on the counter. I asked the pharmacist about it, and she brought over a shiny little blue and green box containing the bottle. It was priced up at £6.99. This sounded like quite a lot of money for such a small item, so ...

Algae replacement Therapy

Advantages: Great for plecs, well designed packaging
Disadvantages: Limited use if you don't have a plec, my other fish don't touch it.

Hikari Algae Wafers. These are thin discs of various vegetable matters. They are for fish that live on or near the bottom of the tank. I have a large number of Farlowella catfish, along with a bullnose plec and a clown plec. But you will already know this if you have been following my previous ramblings (Blatant plug, Sorry). These fish all love these, and the game of chase you see when one of the fish suck onto the wafer and swims around with it to get away from the other Farlowellas can be quite a giggle. I’m not being cruel, I put three or four in to stop fighting, but they always seem to want the same one. I fish any uneaten ones before they start breaking up. I will point out that these plecs are kept in separate tanks, as they are territorial and will fight. Due to a burst tank (a stray snooker ball actually), I had to ...
