Dentures – ugh!! Those things your granny and granddad wear right?! Not necessarily – I have a small upper plate with five dentures on after having several extractions due to a severe dental infection last year. Missing teeth doesn’t bother me on the vanity level, I thought some falsies would help me with the small obstacle of eating! Not so, as yet, I’m still adjusting.
On the whole, after a couple of adjustments, ... ...and uncomfortable. However, it does still rock a little when under the pressure of eating. “What shall I do?” I thought, “get a fixative” I answered myself.

On the whole, after a couple of adjustments, my plate is a pretty good fit despite feeling strange and uncomfortable. However, it does still rock a little when under the pressure of eating. “What shall I do?” I thought, “get a fixative” I answered myself.
I was loath to spend a lot of money on something I knew nothing about and had no experience of so I bought Superdrugs’ own brand denture Fixative Cream for the princely sum of £1.39 – it was the cheapest I could find! It looks it too – a violent sicky pink old-fashioned looking box holds a tube featuring the same violent pink colour together with some blue and white stripes for that toothpaste look!
The fixative itself is a thick cream, again the same violent sicky pink very off-putting colour! You just squeeze three strips of it around the outer edges of your denture plate and then stick it into your mouth as usual, leave for a few minutes without eating or drinking, and, the tube would have us believe, they are then firmly fixed in place for “daily comfort and security” – wrong!
True, there was a cushioning effect but my plate still rocked alarmingly and could be pulled out again with ease and no obvious extra resistance, which I would have expected with a fixative on it. The cream itself leaked a little round the sides and filled my mouth with a chalky, yet at the same time oily, goo which tasted of nothing in particular but was very unpleasant.
For a first time, inexperienced user I found this fixative cream to be alarmingly ineffective, tricky to use, unattractive and unpleasant in the mouth. Maybe I need a little practise with it or maybe all fixatives are like this? I don’t know but this certainly was a very disillusioning experience!
