When I was a younger teenager I went through the unavoidable stages of puberty, we’ve all been there and if you’ve not you will be soon! The worst way it affected me was my skin, it went quite oily but was intermitted with periods of dryness too. Now my mum will argue with that, she’ll tell everyone that my mood swings were the worst, I was up and down from the ceiling like a yo yo but I still maintain that it was my skin which was the real curse of puberty.
Now I tried everything to get rid of my oily, and sometimes spotty skin, Clearasil, Clean & Clear, every product that could be bought from the chemist appeared on my bathroom shelf at some point but nothing quite seemed to remove every single spot or every single bit of grease, until I came across the Dermalogica Skin Care range. The Dermalogica range was founded in 1986 in Los Angeles (as most good products do tend to originate from the USA this one is no different) by The International Dermal Institute – hence the rather scientific sounding name! All their products boast the absence of artificial colours, synthetic fragrances, alcohol and other products that are considered unnatural and often detrimental to certain skin conditions and types. All emphasis is placed on their products being as natural as possible and on educating the consumer about skin care and maintenance. Products cover the whole spectrum of skin care, from conditioning your skin to moisturizing it – they cater for every need. Their homepage is www.dermalogica.com so if you want more scientific info check it out!
Other products included in the Dermalogica range include: -
Dermalogica Day Bright (brightens & protects skin during the day) Dermalogica Night Bright (rejuvenates & re-hydrates skin during the night) Dermalogica Sheer Tint Moisture (comes in light, medium and dark to protect from UV, moisturise the skin and act as a foundation too) Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel (soap free and foaming this time, removes any skin impurities)
* The Product *
The product is a dermal clay cleanser which basically means that it incorporates the refining products of a cleanser as well as the purifying products of a facial clay mask. The information given states that it contains a “purifying blend of naturally-absorbent Kaolin and Bentonite” with clays to cleanse the skin and “cooling astringent extracts of Watercress and Menthol to soothe and calm.” And so letting the scientist in me escape I decided to find out a little more about this “miraculous” and oh so “natural” products.
Kaolin – This is defined as a fine, white clay which is very pure in character. Kaolin’s main properties involve absorbing moisture and helps stop skin from shining or appearing oily. You may also like to know that if digested it contains anti-diarrhea properties too – what a bargain!
Bentonite – Again this is type of clay, derived from weathered volcanic ash (really does make you wonder what you’re putting on your face!). Used to absorb oils and greases again so perhaps it could help greasy skin!
Watercress – Extracts of watercress are used to promote skin re-hydration and it’s main properties are to moisturize and soften (funny, I thought it was a vegetable!).
Menthol – It’s main uses within the cosmetic field is as an astringent and antimicrobial product which basically means that it tones, firms and also destroys any harmful bacteria that may be on your skin – all this in one product!
Sambucous – Just a posh name for the flower elderberry which is known for it’s soothing and softening abilities, discovered first by the Egyptians who believed it to improve the complexion – and it still does!
Lemon – Very high in natural acids it’s known for it’s ability to rejuvenate the skin naturally by containing a high percentage of Vitamin C – it will also lighten, tone and exfoliate your skin gently.
And so there you have it; I bet you never knew how many flowers and anti-diarrhea products went into a simple skin cleanser!
* The Packaging *
I always feel slightly disappointed when I use this product; the packaging to me just lacks imagination and creativity. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t buy a product purely based on it’s packaging, that would just be stupid (honest) and I know the Dermal Institute prides itself on injecting all it’s money and knowledge into producing the best quality cleanser but couldn’t they just add a little bit of colour?! For those of you who have never seen the packaging it’s in quite a plain, plastic, grey bottle with 2 shades of grey – a lighter grey as the general colour with the writing in a darker grey. The medium sized bottle has a useful pop open lid which makes application so much easier than screw tops so thanks for that at least and the large bottle has a pump dispenser - bargain!
* The Actual Cleanser *
The actual product claims to be fragrance free and to an extent it is free from all additives and unnatural aromas but the smell of menthol is almost overpowering. Think of the Head & Shoulders shampoo and you’re half way there – it’s not entirely unpleasant but it is quite an acquired smell. To me it does remind me of the sea for some reason, and also tea tree oil – both renowned for their cleansing properties so maybe that’s the general idea – cleanse by word association?? It’s clear in colour, quite runny in viscosity properties and that’s about all there is to say on that aspect!
* Application *
As it’s very runny you have to be careful to only apply a small amount, it’s recommended you apply with either finger tips or a cotton pad – I opt for the latter as it’s easier to ensure even application by just wiping it over your skin. It’s best to leave it for approx. 30 seconds so it has time to cleanse your skin and then merely either wipe or wash off – I always opt for the latter as it’s easier. The only disappointing thing to note here is the lack of foam, I’m used to cleansers that foam slightly or at least smell nice but this one does neither! It's recommended that you go through this procedure twice - as once isn't often enough to completly cleanse skin - personally I couldn't be bothered with this!
* After Effects *
After the initial application my skin is always left feeling slightly tingly, never irritated as such but tingly none the less. It always feels remarkably cleaner, like I’ve just had a facial or a face mask applied and it does often leave that slightly tight-ish feeling you often get after a face mask. It does feel slightly drier and less oily than usual as well as much fresher. After a week's application the oil content had visibly reduced, my skin appeared much clearer, less greasy and more balanced. To the touch it was neither dry nor oily. In the long term it is an ideal way to reduce and control oily skin – within a fortnight of regular usage (twice daily) my skin was already a great deal clearer as well as much less oily. A word of warning is not to use for long continuous periods if at all possible, after using it for about a month my skin did start to dry out. It’s best recommended for using when your skin is at that oily stage, perhaps just before that time of the month, or for a short time when you hit puberty, now I just keep it handy on the shelf and tend to use it for a couple of days a few times a year when my skin is unexpectedly greasy – apart from that soap and water does me fine!
* Value for Money *
Now here’s the big downside, the price. As with all good quality products we’re always reminded that we pay for what we get and I’ve found that for the majority of products that’s true (although sometimes you do discover a little golden egg that’s priced very cheaply indeed) and this product is no exception. The average sized bottle contains 237ml (like the average shampoo bottle) and prices do vary depending where you buy it.
* Availability *
Priced at £33.10 for 473ml from Jason Shankey (www.jasonshankey.co.uk) Priced at £26.48 for 473ml from Beauty Flash (www.beautyflash.co.uk) – special promotion
To buy from a high street store your best bet is to go to the website www.dermalogica.com and enter your postcode as most outlets are smaller chains or individual beauty stores. * Recommendation *
I do have to say I’d recommend this product to anyone who suffers from oily, greasy or spot prone skin as it really does do the job – if you can live with the smell and the price then you’re half way there! It’s had an excellent write up from the press too, here’s a few snippets I’ve managed to collect to sell it to you even more: -
In Style – “The product that the experts find indispensable – Dermal Clay Cleanser, best facial cleanser for oily or combination skin.”
And so there you have it, I’ll always be keeping a bottle of this handy at the back of my bathroom shelf for any troubled moments, I recommend you do the same too!
...thanks to this and the dermalogica anti-bacterial face wash. She like me, uses it to prevent and clear up the odd few spots.
I have very sensitive skin therefore it is not uncommon for me to suffer a sudden flare up of painful spots. I use the clay cleanser most days and when these breakouts do occur (perhaps every 5 weeks or so) this product is excellent in calming them down.
For best results you should massage it onto wet skin for approximately ... ...still a third left.
Dermalogica is reknown for being the world's leading skin care brand. Unlike other cheap harsh brands such as St. Ives or Clearasil they really do offer results. This is why you would have to pay that bit extra. However in the long term I feel it is worth it as it lasts for so long.
I would advise shopping around for the best price. I purchased mine new off ebay for £13. Well below the market retail price.

Advantages: Does what it says on the bottle Disadvantages: Can be messy, longer to apply, menthol frangrance irritates my eyes.
...was first introduced to the Dermalogica range, by my beautician and tried a variety of their products, which are lovely to use, always light, mostly frangrance free and hypoallergenic (less likely to provoke an allergic reaction).
Even at 38, I'm still prone to the ocassional break out, which is an absolute pain. Not only do my spots last longer, but having darker skin, I'm always left with a dark scar where the blemish was.
I've been using Dermalogica's ... ...messy, takes more time to apply and remove and the menthol fragrance does make my eyes sting and water slightly, but this is probably because my eyes are naturally sensitive. Also the Dermalogica range is not cheap, prices start from about £15. I would, however, definately reccommend this product. ...

Advantages: It helps with breakouts Disadvantages: Quite expensive
I had never heard of this range of beauty products until I went on my hen party to our local spa.
We had a fab time, facials and massages and pedicures, we felt a million dollars afterwards. I was very impressed with the facial that I had. it was so relaxing and my skin felt so soft and nice afterwards i couldn't stop touching it to feel how nice it was. I wanted to have this feeling at home so i asked them what products they had used and they replied ... ...the only place you can buy it. I think you may be able to get it off the internet now as well. I choose to buy the cleanser, active moist and a moisture masque. It came to £60 in total, the clay cleanser was about £25.00 but you get a massive amount for your money.
You only need a small amount of the product and you should use it twice in one wash. Wash with it first, then rinse and wash again. The clay is pure white in colour, it feels cool and ...

Advantages: It works Disadvantages: It's expensive.
Since I was eleven I suffered from acne (suffered in past tense as now I consider self well recovered!!) And it wasn't until I turned 16 that I discovered a small gap in the clouds.
We all know what its like to be pickled at one point or another in our lives and many times we just go into a shop look at the reasonably priced products designed for fast spot relief! But honestly can anyone say that they got what they paid for?
I used to use 'Clearasil' ... ...of spots. Honestly, they occasionally did the job but, I didn't want to a cleaner that could cause permanent skin damage.
Cheap adhesive cleansers such as Clearasil use a large amount of alcohol in their product, this does get rid of spots, but eventually it rips of your skin leaving it dry, dull and lifeless - spots included.
Other brand products promising to clear acne are often unreliable and real care in choosing the right product is essential.
